New type of OPEN
New type of OPEN
Spotted on Tuesday evening in London. Seemed to have the roughly current selection of games but with a split screen, where the top screen explained each game in more detail and generally tried to deimpenetratasize the normally impenetrable OPEN system. Had half hoped for some Nintendo DS-style split-screen hi-jinks, but this was sadly not to be. That said, it looks good and the games selection was great. Have heard of one more in London since spotting it, has anyone else seen them?
Hi
Yep Open have been converting older cabinets.............

And heres a selection of the games on the last update....including the right on time as discussed in another thread............

That Monster Cash seems to be played quite frequently in these parts.
I will update the top 10 games on my Open Machine in the lost Open Virginity Thread soon - not had time recently.

'As with all FatSpanner products great care has been taken with the styling to create a product with maximum longevity and appeal, never though at the expense of practicality and usability'.NOTE PRACTICALITY AND USABILITY.If they are refering to the standard open cabinet they should be taken to taken to trading standards. The hardest job in the world must be trying to sell an old Open to a pub landlord (except Dave and a few other hardy souls).I suppose you could say the cabinet is practically useless! The new one is likely to be a vast improvement. It cant be any worse.

Played one of the new split-screen Opens last night. Points worth making are:
(a) Easier to find games on than the old Opens, although still not perfect and a bit of work is required in that respect. I think at some stage Open are going to need to bite the bullet and have sequencing pages of games like Paragons.
(b) The top screen is a bit wasted - you can select games from it (i.e. it forms part of the main menu) but during a game it basically just shows a large static graphic relating to the game. That's a bit annoying as it does show the entire pub what you're playing.
(c) There appears to be an interesting feature that the bank cannot go above £20, and will auto-pay if it would otherwise do so. We'd banked about £4 and then won a £20JP, and at the *exact* moment of winnage the machine spewed out the £4 without our asking for it.
(d) Key point though is the one we played had a *really really dodgy* coin mechanism. After said £20JP had been won we rolled a quid back one which basically seemed to sit in the coinslot - we sent another quid down after it and the machine just swallowed both. A third quid again just sat there in the coinslot. Not remotely good enough really for a new cabinet and I hope this isn't a recurrent fault. The machine I played had been broken the last time I happened by which suggests to me that maybe it is a recurrent fault.
Generally I'm more of the DMAC school re. Opens - I think they're a good and entertaining thing but there's definitely quite a bit of work for them to do to survive in the SWP oligopoly.

dmac it all depends how you look at it.I would rather make a profit totalling £50 by visiting 5 pubs than £50 from one pub.Opens are very time consuming so I have to be in a certain frame of mind to play one.
drawbacks(1) time consuming (2) poor menu graphics (3) not good looking cabinet (4) games dont fill up (5)too many games(6)cant find games easily.
advantages (1) you win money (if they payout!).
The other fat spanner swp's are much better, however I havent seen the new open unit so cannot comment. The automatic payout feature is a good idea as at least you dont build up your credits to get a non payout.

Does anyone else find the thought of 'Big Money Take Your Pick' just about the least enticing come-on ever?

I assume this means you can now win 75p for a 10 minute game rather than 35p...
