The chipping in -------- didn't end with ridiculously difficult questions]not[/i] want me to name the game based on the the clues I have given, presumably because you still have access to a few unchipped ones? Tell me where they are and I'll keep our wee secret ...Nil Satis wrote:Well, that's not strictly true as my one of my golden games did appear on the last Open I saw (in Southampton) but it had been chipped so as to be almost comically difficult and non-paying, unless your middle names were Dewey Decimal and you knew the exact average attendances for 2006/07...

I'm not sure if this is aimed at me but I am happy to name the game in question - it's Spinner Takes All. A few months ago I was able to get pretty good at this one and presumed that a few others on here would have done the same.cool wrote:i dont know why people tease its a forum- if you dont want to reveal something just keep it to yourself and dont say anything-- Its irritating and pointless.
Just to be clear, no 'cheating' of any sort was involved here, not even at the most minor level of writing down wrong answers or anything like that. It just happened to be the case that with a good memory for wrong answers and, as luck would have it in this case, having 70s and 80s pop music as a personal strength I was able to learn enough to be able to take repeated JPs out of the game.
The JP was only £12 for a £1 stake and I still had plenty of losing games but nonetheless it was a very decent game while it lasted.
It disappeared from sight a couple of months ago (it was only on the Gamesnets I believe) only to reappear recently on a few of those plus the Open I mentioned earlier. On its reappearance however it had been set up to be ridiculously difficult - as you can get quite a few wrong answers without it being Game Over I was able to witness it give me 15 spoilers of the most difficult kind (Dewey Decimal numbers and exact average attendances etc) in a row. On top of that the payout had been changed so that the JP is now only £3 for £1.
All in all the current incarnation is a complete waste of time likely to be shunned by everybody, punters and players alike.
The similarities to Blockbusters (the Super Gold Run version) are that:
(i) the same spoiler questions appear and
(ii) the JPs on there also can be pretty miserly - £4 for 50p or £5 for £1 - but I'm not clear if that is the consequence of the game being chipped or whether it was behaviour that was programmed in from the beginning, namely to retreat into low JPs after one larger one (£10/£12 I think) had been won on each version.
The Bobby Darin clue is that his most famous song, certainly as far as quiz machine question writers is concerned, is 'Multiplication', which was a useful feature of the old Spinner Takes All payout mechanism - in the current version the multiplier is always "x 1" (although I wait with bated breath for the REALLY difficult version with "x 0" as the multiplier
Hope that all helps. Back in my box now to prepare for a really lucrative couple of days...
it wasnt particularly a jibe at you just a general point. Spinner takes all was I believe a favourite of Rocky another pro, I am not lying to say that I only played it once or twice. The prime attraction to a machine should be its potential profitability , however one of my failings is to take the enjoyment/look/quality of questions into consideration when these factors should be irrelevant. For example x-factor can be a bastardly difficult game to get money out of but for me it ticks all the boxes- good graphics/interesting questions/and excitement when going through the money levels.wasted a lot of time in a lot of pubs playing this.
I hope Nil Satis won't mind my saying that it was I who pointed out the potentials of Spinner to him: I took a swift £18 from £1.50 from my first play but like Cool didn't play this widely as I only managed to find it at one or two London GamesNet locations before it got taken off! So availability of a given game is clearly another reason for choosing to play it a lot. The chippings do render it utterly pointless, though.
NS's comments on Blockbuster may only apply to the latest GamesNet version (i.e. the one with 50p/£1 play and varying JPs) - the previous incarnation (50p play for £10JP) is a very fine game, as evidenced by the almost complete absence of references to it on here in all the time it's been out! One of the few games that, on general knowledge alone, I was able to have a realistic chance of a couple of big prizes in a row from the day it came out. Given this seems to pay out JP or £5 each time I visit the few Opens I know, I'd not be surprised to hear it pays out more than 30%, but of course the locals probably play it badly (like a lot of good games, it asks challenging questions from the off normally).
I agree with Cool that X Factor is still a favourite, when one can find it in a new location (increasingly difficult round here...)

Hi
Sorry not been around for a few weeks but California beckoned me for a few weeks!
Anyways my OPEN machine went BANG on Sunday. There was a smell of burnt smoke from it and it would not power up.
Rang Fatspanner who despatched another pc base unit to me on overnight delivery - plugged it all in and its now working fine again.
However all the hiscores have now been wiped from the machine so I am expecting abuse from the Fantasy Footballers !!
Also all the game data has been lost as well - so will leave it a few weeks before I start with the top and bottom 10's again.
I have been told to expect an update disc sometime in October with approx 12 new games on it.

That's pretty good service from Fat Spanner although a bit disturbing that the original unit broke so soon after you'd got it. Players should be pleased as any low hanging cash which had been swiped previously will presumably have magically re-appeared. Should make up for the irritation of their hard-won 78 points disappearing from Fantasy Football
.
Wonder what the new games will be?
