A member of this board told me recently in person that Gillingham was a horror show from the SWPs angle so maybe it's a North Kent thing?! Seriously, I suspect that a lot of these towns are poor, working class towns with few chain pubs and therefore few machines - SWPs are really something that need disposable income so I guess if that's not about then neither will SWPs be!
Gillingham ? I recall only three pubs there last time I visited.. not bad offerings from the AWP side mind you ;)

for shi**oles of towns/cities/areas, I put forward for nomination :-

West Bromwich.
Portsmouth.
stab city (Acton)
St. Pauls (Bristol)
Boscombe (Bournemouth)
St. Marys (Southampton)

Last time I walked through St. Pauls, there was bullet casings on the street. Nice.

Must beg to differ on that BM - I was playing there relatively recently and think it's OK - a number of pubs along the main strip and at least six or seven SWPs by my count. Never felt threatened there at all. I recently had the pleasure of checking out Willesden for machines - walked the whole length of the area and it has precisely one proper (i.e. non-Irish shopfront) pub and one SWP - what a sh*thole. The arse end of Willesden, a benighted locality called Church End, is the worst part of London I know of. The "main street" through there, Church Street, is unbelievably squalid and looks almost like a shanty town - and contains an Irish pub called the Burren which looks just about the most unappetising pub in England. I've only ever been through on the bus so have never been in, but put it this way - I doubt it has an ItBox.

Agree with someone who nominated Islington's main strip as a top place, by the way - it's perhaps declined slightly since 2004, as a couple of SWPed pubs have shut, but it's still very full of pubs and SWPs.

Indeed, what an utter s**t-hole.

There are some very ropey parts of Preston.

Worst pub ever: one in Glasgow, near the Barras, about 12 years ago that I was tipped off about a good machine in. There were about 3 females (just about) who appeared to all be decrepit 50+ year-old prozzies, one junkie, some old guy dressed like he was a Mafioso, and the barman looked like he had had acid thrown over his face in the none-to-distant past. Took the money (gingerly) and scarpered. Never again.

I walked into one pub last week to be confronted by the police and some guy with a faceful of blood. Machine was ok though ;)

Used to like playing Chiswick when I was there, I must say.

I was in a local pub when the deputy landlord decided to bar the entire pub Sunday league football team. I was in the middle of flying fists and feet directed towards the fool, but like a true pro I carried on playing the machine. The publican ended up as a panda impersonator with a broken nose....

Hehe, I used to consider pub brawls a nice little bonus as it was an opportunity to collect the bank unnoticed.

as many Londonners know there is an esteemed player known as the Wolf-man. He told me about a time he was in Worthing (>5yrs ago)when he visited a pub called the Thomas A Beckett. He won on the machine walked out into the car park only to find that his car tyres had been slashed by jealous locals who had been in the pub watching him win. When he returned to the pub to ask for witnesses to the event there was much sniggering b4 he had even told them of the tyre slashing--bastards.

Not been there in ages, but there were some truly foul machine-pubs in Birkenhead in the nineties. And the one somewhere on the outskirts of Wigan where my driver got accused of promoting dog-fighting.
