Meters

Could someone please explain to me a little bit about how meters on machines work. I am not sure what these are used for although I understand it is something to do with COINS IN. I am talking about the digital LCD meter at the top of the machine glass.

Also is there any way to reset this?

How many coins have gone in by refiling from the outside

e.g threw the coins slot
