my idea for a new game

Post by Istenem »

going for gold. not just because i was the star but it is so beautifully dated and triumphantly naff.

remember this?

<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/IHv2GcXVb4Q"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/IHv2GcXVb4Q" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

i wish i had been as cool as the fella from gibraltar.

i think it could make a playable game.
i will happily waive my intellectual property rights on this.

hwat am i?

the category is famous johns, 1, 2 or 3? select.

now on to the first round proper.

any thoughts?
nobody ever wins on those things.

Probably a good idea in theory but it would stand or fall on how you could translate the idea into a game that offered something worthwhile to both casual punters and enthusiasts like ourselves. As I've said elsewhere I've always been amazed that a decent Blockbusters spin-off hasn't appeared and particularly so when someone has actually been allowed to have a second go at it (just appearing now on certain Gamesnets) and it's EVEN WORSE than the first attempt, with the utterly laughable Free Game 'star prize'.

Unless you can find a games company with the courage to create a playable game, you'd be better sticking to the happy memories!

Was this the thing hosted by Henry Kelly? Or am I on the wrong 'thread'...

Some other, highly naff, game shows that could / should / may already have been made into SWPs...

-Wipeout
-Every Second Counts (Minus Paul Daniels)
-Call my Bluff (think it was this - Bob Monkhouse? Although not sure how it'd be implemented, but might appeal to the wordsmiths among us).

:)

i am a huge fan bob monkhouse. he was a hugely entertaining and erudite man. but yes, GFG was the henry kelly show which was on just before neighbours when you were off sick from school.

As ever I think NS is right - Going for Gold is a good idea for a conversion, as is Wipeout (I think Every Second Counts was an SWP in the very early days of the late 80s / early 90s). However, I doubt that the money would be there from the games companies to ensure a decent conversion. Whilst we know that the companies can make very good conversions of successful game shows - I give you WWTBAM, TWL and DOND, probably the three most successful SWPs of recent years - that tends only to be where the show is massive at the time and the companies feel confident enough to sink a fair amount into proper design and playtesting. Sadly, if that investment's not there, the result can be real dross - having now played the Blockbusters game that NS refers to, it really is lousy in the extreme - one of the five worst games I've ever played. I suspect Going for Gold et al would fall into the same "nostalgia" category as Blockbusters.

Ah, my bad I meant Bob Holness, although The Bob of the Monkhouse variety did host wipeout if I'm not mistaken? Yes, erudite is indeed the word. An honest man...
