Agreed. Tho' many players may just give up when faced with the UK's top scores. The Peterhouse team, who we found had equal amounts of enthusiasm for the game, seemed to throw in the towel once we had topped their scores (and showed them how to clear the grid).Ernest W. I dare say if we were faced with scores 200-300 pts above our best we might just say 'sod this for a game of soldiers' and do something else with our time.
May be better to have a national tourney instead, so players enter into the fray with egos unpunctured at the local level.
Looking forward to the next London meet, Ernest - hope you're keeping your hand in on PW...

15 achieved CONGRATULATIONS, 17 next.
any game with a hi score table is cosseting players' egos. the old photoplay machines had national tables so it is not beyond the wit of man. it must have been considered by itbox etc but for whatever reason it was abandoned. at ATEI in january itbox's prototype 'lounge' (which had a similar function as this) was fanfared but it has not been seen. (i think there is a thread about this lower down.)
btw. yes; i know that fanfared is not a word

We've now secured the towns of Ipswich, Harwich, Chelmsford and Colchester (beating old forum stalwart ScarletJim's score at the Marquis with a 1704).
A solo effort of 2453 on Sum Up at Harwich's Mariners Hotel Inn is a possible one player record.

sorry to gatecrash the VB social.
was playing WU for about 20 minutes yesterday. the prize bar was around 1400 for £1. anyway.
i was left in one game with
_E
_A
OT
wanted TOEA (not sure if this is allowed)
so shuffled to
_E
_O
TA
anyway pressed the free word button (expecting TOE)
but it gave me OAT (and i am 99% sure that this word never used to be allowed).
so i deduce that the wordlist has been updated, can anyone shed light?

For a good word list they should be on the blower to you good sir: you seem to know a staggeringly worrying amount of obscure and/or obsolete words. Perks of the job, I suppose.
That said, if they had a comprehensive word list there'd be more words to make, more points to make, and potentially more money to pay out.
Not that the extra points would be worth a player's while anyway: at 1,420 points for £1 the game can be fairly sure it won;t be paying out much...

Still kicking about.
