Photos attached of my new PBs - horrible photos though, my camera is on its last legs. No need to put these in the forum EWQ, it's just in case anyone wants proof that 2153 is real!

One point of note I guess - 31 does seem like a lot of words for such a big total, I'd always expected 25-28 to be about right for big 2000+. You could probably get away with taking 30 words for grids stuffed with time letters, but I don't remember this grid being too stuffed with them - maybe 5 Zs, 2 Qs and a J and an X, something like that, ie. good but I've seen better. I was pretty surprised when i saw it was as high as 31 anyway.

can't see the pic Angie :?

i had a jolly jaunt to waxy's little sister yesterday and £1 was 1150ish.
i made a pig's ear of the first game but next up was 250 for a quid, thought a cheeky JP might be on but it turned out to be £4 for 650 £5 for 1850 so i bottled it.

anyway i got QUARTERBACKS which was only 18th on best words

the twitbox must have been relocated from tcr as it had eight uninspired QUIZZICALLYs from DJ. so QUARTERBACKS and the subsequent ACQUAINTANCE were homeless. no occasion for SPRÅKFEL to be keyed in :(

i also got a neat 1000 on boggle just for low-score purposes. couldn't remember how many letters i was allowed and when i was deleting HAIDUC for ISTENEM it timed out so i was HA.

EWQ & Bob - good work getting a 2199, but you haven't said where the host pub was (other than it being a Waxy's)?

TRANQUILLY (340) at the Inn by the Sea, Lee on Solent followed by TRANQUILLITY (456) at Clinkers, Fareham.

As might be obvious, I have (temporarily at least) adopted a strategy that TRANQUILLIZERS(/QUIZZICALITY) + clearance should get me a 2000 score.
Have to say, it goes against the grain to have a word in mind before seeing the grid, though I get the impression that it's the standard approach for people on the high score table.

agree with you there Jonesey, my current mission is to clean up the A-Z so i've been going into games seeing if XYLOPHONISTS is likely which means that any elegance in my play is out of the window. QUIZZICALLY + clearance ought to get you 2000 easily and maybe a couple of quid to boot.

Scored my second best solo score today - 2008 in Yates' - along with a QUIZZICAL and a QUIZZERS in the same venue. Was also within one tile movement of both my first ever 14-letter word and my first ever TRANQ- word. Frustrating.

It won't break any records, but I got "POPPYCOCK" on my way to a career-best 1890 odds.

Can't remember the name of the pub :o ops: - but it was near Waverly Station in Edinburgh. I'd had a few when I did it, which made the score even more surprising.

I also found a Caveman Capers at around the 1200 points mark. I got up to about £6 with 2 extra lives, when in a breathtaking display of arrogance and vanity, I decided to record the momentous occasion (of me getting the 20 sheets) on video. I whipped out my phone and instantly missed the egg and threw away all my extra lives. I then poofed out of the next question, collected my £6, and did the toes, thus leaving the machine dead for a generation of quiz-machine players.

Following on from the Cardinal's observation - WU has now disappeared from 2 of my locals (which is a major blow when you live in somewhere as quiet as Lee). Can't say I'd be bothered to go to a pub to play anything else on the machines at the moment (though won a bit of cash on Caveman Capers and suchlike on Friday - machines obviously pumped full of money by drunks over Christmas ...).

longest word: MISINTERPRETS
highest word: EMBEZZLEMENT

Is that a hint at something sinister or just resignation at the total **** which has no doubt replaced Word Up? I always enjoy a game or two of Word Up at the end of a 'session' and had noticed that it has disappeared from some of the newer Gamesnets (the ones with the blue background, not the red or grey one).

Sadly for you guys I'd hesitate to use the word 'rotated' as this to me would imply the likelihood that it will appear again. 95% of games seem to disappear for good once they are removed - Word Up's sister game Sum Up, which I also quite enjoyed, being a classic example - and, even worse, 95% of what replaces the good games seem now to be unplayable dross.

nothing sinister. just that fatbox/paragon/ind:e rotate the least profitable games off for another in the pool of background (idle) games.
this may not be 100% accurate any more but it used to be this way.
