I don't know if they changed it or not but i'm fairly sure if you hit straight away you still lose 5/6 moves.
Totally take your general point about the pointlessness of it all though.

it crops up fairly often (about 33% of the time on an unraped machine) i had a £7 and a £10 yesterday but only because there were no word games apart from collins gem release of WU.
you won't see three keys on the pavement but once you have two give a the next couple of safes a recce. if you don't see a key in them collect the £1 you should already have and don't waste any more time.
it is certainly doable though.
