Hot or humid....

Post by jpfuk »

Being a miserable old fecker, I like my weather just right. Mainly cloudy, slight wind and the kinda darkness that you get just before hurrican Andrew arrives...

Rain is ok, hail a pain and snow is for austria....

But fuck me is it too hot, even my cider is sweating. Which has kinda led to a slight row in good old jpf house hold.

The better half states that temperiture is fact, and no amount of humidity can make it pysically feel hotter, I say humidity plays a massive factor in increasing the bodys core temperiture, and has a scale of it's own... like pollen count or wind chill factor....

Only thing is, weve both googled it and no where can i find evidence to back up my claim..grrrr

Dose any one have a relative that works in the Met office..lol..

Other wise i'm £10 outa pocket...

Is it not down to the fact that when humidity is high, you are more likely to feel 'sticky'. When skin 'sticks' together, you can certainly feel the heat! Ever tried sleeping on a leather sofa in the middle of summer with no top on? Nice... not. :(

Anyway, not very scientific, but that' my pet theory... :)

Well, it feels hotter when it's humid as the air is holding more moisture, and your bodys sweat etc takes longer to evaporate into saturated air, and is less effective atcooling. I'm afraid high humidity is almost a guarantee here as we are surrounded by the sea, and the moisture gets carried in en route.

In mainland Europe you get much drier air as there is no water, hence why say a temperature similar to today (30-31c) in high summer feels less oppressive as the humidity will probably be 20% or so. Compare that to 50%+ here and it's a big difference...though you do have higher UV levels to contend with there as you are nearer the equator. So many factors eh! 8)

Fantastic reply, but can you add a bit about latent heat of evaporation as you've covered the physical side of reduced cooling potentials due to increased vaapour saturation, but all this humidity carries latent heat as well. Think of it as more energy in the system. So you're trying to cool, but you're also being bombarded casino royale with airborne moisture droplets that are hot. Also bricks, mortar etc building fabrics become hot. these have high latencies, so when it's all cold and frosty and the heating is pumping out like crazy, put your hand on the wall and it'll be cold. Core temperature tptp high.

I mean this is bloody crazy. I'm sitting here and I'm naked and the hairs on my arms are black, blacker than normal as cash stacka they're laced with sweat. Just crazy.
