or am I just rather cynical?
Neither the scrabble whiz nor I have got beyond £6 for an individual game. To get to this amount you usually have to motor through at least three pyramids.
His advantages are:
- very quick anagramming (of words jumbled up in a 'rack' type arrangement, rather than in a WU style). He will get 99% of anagrams within 3 seconds, however obscure or long they are (I'm not exaggerating). This means he can speed through multiple pyramids.
- nigh-on complete word knowledge. Brainteaser throws lots of abstruse 'Scrabble words' at you, especially if you're boning it, so knowing stuff like TYROSINE and EPACT helps (I've seen both on the game).
The thing about him is that his word knowledge and anagramming allows him to spank the game even if it has raised the difficulty level as, for him, 'difficult' words or anagrams are no trickier than 'easy' ones.
In conclusion, to be able to bust Brainteaser, you need to spend 10 years memorising the Scrabble dictionary and practising your anagrams until you can get stuff like STONIER+Y within 3 seconds.
