bumped into him in waterstones, winchester this afternoon and had a close to half an hour conversation with him , which isnt bad considering he didnt have a clue who I was. He answered a q put on this site why didnt he do quizzers- the rest of the illuminating conversation will remain private- and it was pretty much what we thought.
He played them in the early 90's in London but gave up because:
(1) didnt appreciate being banned or machines being switched off.
(2) didnt like the innovation of multi-game machines
(3) quiz machines diluted/didnt add to his knowledge, competing with his real interest , quizzes .
Pleasure to meet him - top bloke.
and I was right he did work for Winchester Council for a brief period although I missed him by two years(left in 82 I started in 84).

No, he won the tournament. I wasn't *too* far behind in terms of my placing, but in terms of my points score (and knowledge generally) I am way behind him. There are one or two others who can beat him on their day, but he is still the best in the country - something like Eggheads gives only glimpses of his knowledge.cool wrote:did the swp player slay the top quiz player?
or put in a spirited effort?

only once had the pleasure to be in his company.
Q. (==space== so it is obvious that there is something good afterwards)
gustav ii (of sweden) : give any year in his reign?
to know an answer is extraordinary. that is real cerebral power and not rote.
power beats strength. wisdom beats learning. knowledge makes a poem.

nobody ever wins on those things.
Kevin's range of knowledge is amazing, and his knowledge has depth as well as range, i.e. he doesn't just one or two key facts about each area. He is also (as others have mentioned on here) a thoroughly nice guy who is never arrogant about his abilities. I was also at the event on Saturday and one or two of his answers actually had other decent quizzers laughing out loud in admiration about his knowledge and speed of recall.
I did manage to slip vaginal bob into the conversation (if you pardon the expression) & it was met with a slight raising of the eyebrows . Perhaps I could be employed as a roving ambassador promoting the merits of the VB (MAFIA RESOURCE) , that is helping me to construct words of monumental proportions , so big even Kevin hasnt even heard of them!
