Gamesnet Release 14

Post by Nil Satis »

Has there ever been a more ropey selection of new games?
Nil Satis wrote:As far as my memory serves Play Your Cards Right hasn't been around before, which is very odd given how long it is since that show was at its peak! It is a standard Q&A game with the 'Higher' vs. 'Lower' sequences of playing cards built in. Obviously when it wants to stop you winning all it has to do is give you successive dodgy cards - "Lower than a King you say? Ooh, unlucky - another Ace!". This was certainly the case the first time I saw it, and I haven't yet found another one to give it another try.
I've had another good look at this one since I posted this and it's exactly as I thought - it's another game that's tight in the extreme. It doesn't actually give you particularly dodgy cards in the three qualifying games but then it doesn't need to - it either gives you a succession of real spoilers in the third game or it kills you in the money game to ensure that you'll only win £1 or so.
Nil Satis wrote:Rocket Ronnie is indeed Q&A. It starts off quite friendly, and may indeed offer a few early smallish wins on installation, but it rapidly gets to be as hard as any quiz game I can remember. I suspect your customers will find it very unappealing as even winning £1 will be a major achievement. It has the useful facility of a weekly scoreboard of highest frame scores and via that I'm not seeing it getting major play anywhere from punters, or indeed from the quiz machine versions of Ronnie himself!
As for this one, bloody hell! - has there ever been a mainstream quiz game which retreats into impossible spoilers so early on? Sometimes you are only three or four questions in when you are being asked about the flags of Burundi, Vanuatu and Kazakhstan or which of three authors you've never heard of was nominated for some obscure prize in the 70s.

The other new games are that Treasure Quest - how quickly can you lose £5? - and Cash Smasher. The latter is a non-Q&A game which I can see might offer a little value to those with very good visual recognition and speed but the purist in me hopes that, if so, it will be skill that conquers it rather than some weakness in the programming...

The games that are going appear to include Fantasy Football Quiz, 1 vs 100 and Are You Smarter. So nothing to miss then!

Used to be hot at tai play (159 100) but tried cash smasher and at £1 a go is a total non starter. Although i have only played it 4 or 5 times i wont be chasing! Having to clear 4 rounds for a pound when the time is running down just short of the speed of sound (to protect the speakers i suppose) is no more than a headache.

Has anyone done better at this; should i persevere?

On a different note, wtf is the 50/50 about on family guy and rocket ronnie? It isnt a real bonus as you only get it from the start when the Q's are straightforward and it expires after 3/4 questions. A bloody DOND gives you that but doesnt herald the fact!
In Gustavo Augusto Poyet Dominguez we trust.

This is one of the reasons that a chum and I childishly resorted to playing 'Adult' STD (unfortunate acronym that!) on Megatouch the last pub I was in... ;)

Any idea what a rough top score is for you on this matthew??
My local has a megatouch and our top score is 377,000 I think, I'll double check tomorrow. I'm also a keen player of Quick match although I always do the wacky.

Regarding new SWP games has anybody played that match the aliens thing on the T'itboxes?? It makes my ruddy eyes water squinting at the screen looking for slight differencial changes in the aliens. Absolute Nails!!!

As a twosome, we racked up 257,xxx as the highest, which was well into double figures for the amount of pictures 'processed'. ;)

Not played the aliens thingy - did that at one time be the 'featured game' on Titboxes? I'm down the pub tonight for some post-birthday beverages (then off work until Monday, woop!) so may well give a few other games a chance.

I only came across it about xmas time and have had a few bashes at it but the aliens are far to similar at times.
That 377,000 score was about 5 of us although thats really made up of 2 core players and the odd help from the others. theres 2 of us that play it quite often and 280,000 is our bench mark, but it's getting harder as the screen has lost some brightness so we get shafted now and then by differences that you just can't see!!

I upset the landlady that has this in, she's always on it playing all the card games, I went to watch the liverpool-Everton cup replay a few weeks back to find non of the lads where in so had a dabble on the game where you have to make 11.
The landlady was top on 113,000 since november 2006. My best was 144,000. The night I told her about it she didn't leave the unit for 2 hours

Ahem! Would it be ungallant of me to suggest that staring at and touching pictures of scantily-clad ladies for hours on end has in fact affected your eyesight, rather than there being any problems with the screen...?

I've played Cash Smash a few times and it seems very poor value, more so seeing as its a quid a pop. First two rounds are always easy then the third round.. no chance, the timer flies down at ridiculous speed and the selection of tiles is so varied. Even played perfectly, I dare say the time limit will always beat you.

On the very few occasions i've managed £2 the third round has played just like the first two, before ramping up the difficulty.

The best value fair games for non quizz specialists in recent times for me have been "Double Take" on the t'itboxes and PairZ on the Games media units. they both came across quite fair and even when not paying you only just missed out on prizes rather than have about 10 seconds to find 5 differences on a picture that would take you half a day to find just 1.
