ok, ok. Another thing I've noticed is that there are six spaces for EPROMS, but only four EPROM chips actually on the board.
Two chips for sound and two chips for the actual program. I can provide more details if needed. Anyhow, is there anything else that could be causing this non starting behaviour, or is it definitely the EPOCH main board, now that I've changed the PSU?

99.9 percent it's the MPU.JG wrote:ok, ok. Another thing I've noticed is that there are six spaces for EPROMS, but only four EPROM chips actually on the board.

4 roms is normal.
Only other thing that ever really goes wrong on these is the lamp driver board, and that's usually burnt connections.
I take it you have a boot chip? I can't see why on earth it would be missing though...

Hmm that's very wrong. Didn't notice it as first glance it looks like a wonky label!machine doctor wrote:Alex,
Look again at photo 0084, and the second eprom from the left.
Looks to me as though it's not fitted in the socket correctly (two pins too high) and it's out of line with the other eproms.
I have blown picture up and def looks suspect, see what you guys think.
Prise it out carefully, progressively from both ends in turn, use a spoon handle or blunt knife.
Don't try to pull it with fingers, as folded legs always result!
CRITICAL UPDATE:
That EPROM *is* in line. It's a TrayHoptical illusion. My shaky hands and the darkness have created a blurred photo whereby crystal clear zoomage is impossible. I could macro is up and steadify my hand, but my eyes will testify that the EPROMypoos is in line with the others. It's just a wonky label.
In that case, it looks like I will be needing a new EPOCH main board. However I await info regarding this mysterious 'boot chip'. Would the lamp driver board being knackered cause a lack of start up? Is it like Christmas Tree lights? When one component is knackered then everything is up the spout?
Mind you Christmas Tree lights are not like that anymore are they?
Cheers,
JG

Yes Epoch machines can be a bit like that, if one board goes down. However it's still less likely that the lamp board is causing the type of fault you have.
The boot chip is the smaller socketed chip on the MPU. But I doubt it will be missing anyway, as this would just cause almost total deadness.
Still say MPU - time to try another board.

OK, first of all thanks Alex. I now have a working MPU board. OK, all fitted and wow! It lights up
<<Drumroll>>
B U T (!) I now get a message saying Pay 100p Err 0.1 on the LED. I knew this wasn't going to be easy. THe hopper assembly pulls out and connects to something at the back of the cabinet. I think it's all connected up. What the bloopin' 'eck is happening?
CHeers (again),

OK, it wasn't connected up. We now have a stake key error 4.9
I assume the stake key is below the % key.
If it is then it's just an open D/9 pin plug. It looks like someone has hooked up a bit of a wire coathanger from pin one to pin five. I'm probably talking mollocks.
I guess (heart sinks) this probably means the stake key is missing and this is an essential item. D'oh.
Any clues?
