obituary- top landlord

Post by cool »

Had a bit of a shock today as I read in the local pub news that a Winchester publican Steve Sankey died suddenly 6months ago age 58. I regularly visited his pubs 1985-2000(he left pub trade 2000). After a rocky start at the beginning of swp's I had the temerity to stand in front of the GUAB and he quite rightly threatened to ban me! However once my pad was put away he was always happy to see me despite winning mostly. He was a instantly recognisable landlord with a mexican bandit type moustache! RIP Steve.(landlord of Rising Sun & Exchange Winchester).

if there are any other landlords who brighten up the day as we trudge around the pubs of Britain particularly if they are in Southern England I'd like to hear about them regardless of whether the pub has a machine or is now machineless.

The Landlord is very much a dying breed these days - literally and figuratively.

Most places just have managers these days, and often a string of them at that.

It's a sad state of affairs. :(
