ah, given that it was a race around the quad in cambridge could it be laps and therefore the answer might be roger bannister?
failing that, i think there was another chris, chris brasher is coming to mind for some reason.
nobody ever wins on those things.

Think you will find that it was Oxford. The University had their own running track, I believe.
