Sheffield

Post by explayer »

i have never seen mention of Sheffield on here before but some recent bad experiences lead me to believe that there are players out there :( - i live here and work in Barnsley ( which is good territory ) , but Sheffield is bloody difficult at the moment , there are the obligatory Itboxes in spoons , lloyds , yates etc which are getting harder, but there is one pub in particular which is either absolutely thrashed every day or has the tightest couple of machines around - The Howard outside the train station is the place , it has new machines ( not sure what , not itboxes ) but they are awful : recently have lost £20 in an hour on more than one occasion which has never happened to me before , it features the usual problems , instant spoilers on DOND and unreachable targets ( i have the hi-score at Hangman of over 1000 and it was worth £1 ! ) , this has been happening for weeks , so rip-off pub subsidising admittedly cheap beer or favourite haunt of pro ?

I won £40 in The Howard on Deal or No Deal, but this was back in May when I was in Sheffield to watch the snooker. I don't go around Sheffield often and stick to Barnsley, but I do remember it being a rather fruitful machine that I was going to head back again, during the snooker .... but maybe not now.

I didn't realise Barnsley was such good territory, I tend to visit the pubs on the outskirts for a decent pint and the odd quid in the quiz machine. Although I did nip into Walkabout last week and found 'Can U Dig It' - a personal favourite of mine, depsite it's measly £4 return!

I popped into Broomhill for old times sake for an evening last year on my way up to Headingley for the cricket and found it quite good- we were drinking in studenty pubs (Broomhill Tax, Fox &Duck, Scream FKA the York; The Notty; The Old Grindstone etc) so not sure if that generally makes for easier pickings or not

this is a truism about student towns - there is no doubt in my mind that ' student ' pubs are the easiest to pick off , the student union bars are great when i can blag my way in :D - a great combination of pissed up students who are not as clever as they think they are leads to good opportunities - there are plenty of places in Sheffield where you can make £3 or £4 per machine and come out with a healthy profit , its just this one place which always seems to beat me! - but Barnsley town centre is chock full of SWP's and very few clued up locals , another great combination :D

Last time I was in Bar One (Sheffield Uni student bar) there were five Itboxes in there.

There could be any number of explanations. The fact it is in a large city near a train station means it's perfectly likely that a top-level player might have popped in and drained it whilst passing through (for example, I'd have thought Sheffield could easily be within QuizMaster's sphere of operation).

Generally I'd expect a large city like Sheffield to be better played than a smaller one like Barnsley, because it'll make more sense for serious players to travel to Sheffield for a day than would be the case for Barnsley. Alternatively it could just be that the locals are relatively clued-up and play the machine pretty well. There's at least one pub in the City which is off the beaten track and (AFAIK) is not frequented by (m)any "real boys" but rarely pays much because the locals all take an interest in the machine and play it reasonably tidily.

I'd not worry too much about it and focus on the machines elsewhere that you consider more likely to pay.

Sheffield has at least one 'Grade A' pro. I've seen him play and he's top class. I've spoken to him and he's a nice bloke as well.
Ex-university, never had a job, pension now in place, 'nuff said!
Quizard may be as good for all I know so this city, especially the centre, is likely to be tight for any visitor.

Money goes in, I don't bother going to Sheffield to take it out.

Tis not on my remit. I also know of the grade A Sheffield pro who is top quality and long term (and is indeed a nice bloke).

We avoid treading on each others' toes.

thanks for the contributions everyone , this confirms my view that i am up against some good players in Sheffield - certainly it has been tough for a while now - i will try to stick off the beaten track , probably in the stagnant gene pool which is Barnsley and surrounds :D
