The lowest jackpot I've seen is 16,000. I think I won 4 or 5 quid for the 12,000...

Join http://www.apterous.org and you can play solely numbers games on Countdown 'til your heart's content. Bet you get beaten by some of the pros on there though!

Being good at the letters game is a very mathematical concept (pattern recognition, logic etc) so with practice this should become easy.

Whilst on the topic of Countdown, there used to be a Countdown quiz machine at my university but it got taken away --- I used to love that. Are there any itboxes with Countdown on as I want to solve anagrams for cash! Brainteaser was another good one where cash was readily available for word/anagram freaks like me.

'Fraid you won't find either of these titles too easily any more. There are still one or two very old GamesNets about with a Countdown title on, but it's not the one you remember fondly I suspect. And Brainteaser might be found very occasionally on early and unupdated Open machines, but nowhere else.

There are, however, newer word games available which I would recommend you look at. Players with top-end word skills can and do make money off the SWPs.

I think itbox Countdown (which was the one with anagrams - a conversion of version 2 of one of the very last standalone Maygay machines) was on the second issue of itbox. That's a mighty long time ago!

Like what, Grecian? The Countdown one I couldn't do the questions but the anagrams were fine and as for Brainteaser, that was well easy. I want those back :( . Word soup I can't seem to do well although I've spoken to a Scrabble champion who says with practice at it I could get good at it as he has too.

Word Soup was what I was thinking of, I must admit. From time to time other pure word games come out e.g. Word Blox or Scrabble although both of those are only found occasionally now (I think). You might also consider the many hangman type games available - think of e.g. Pints Make Prizes on the Paragons. I expect others on this forum could give a more informative answer than this - I don't play word games much at all.
