Unusually for this forum, a question on etiquette. If you're watching someone play a quiz game and you know an answer they evidently don't, should you tell them the answer, or is it every man [or woman] for themself ?
For myself, the criteria for helping are:
1. Is the player an apparently single woman [answer: virtually never];
2. If male, does the player look like a decent sort of fellow;
3. Would helping jeopardise my chances of a decent win when I get on.
(Also, would think it height of bad manners to give tips on a skill game like WU).
Am I a bit tight not to help all the time or naive to help at all ?
[again, apols if this covered on another thread]

i'd say keep mum. unless it is somebody you know.
we've all had people barking obviously right/obviously wrong answers.
if i'm gonna get something wrong i'd prefer to do it on my own or with whomever i'm there. re helping on WU: definite bad idea, if people watch the top players they get an idea of how to do it.

nobody ever wins on those things.
I'd not be nosey tbh, as i'd hate to get an answer wrong and look like a tit.
Strangely enough though, was in the pub last night, and was playing some random footy game(on the gamesbox that has nuts on), and this 25YO lass came over and starting giving me all the answers to things like "swansea squad 2004/5" and "hearts squad 02/03" etc other totally random players i've never heard of, possible the queerest thing i've ever seen.
To top it all off i click on "Dunfermaline athletic 04/05" or summit like that.
Comes up _ _ _ _ / _ _ _ _
She takes a look and goes "aah, noel hunt" and it was right too
Maybe she's bonking one of the programmers... any takers??

I'd only really ever watch other people playing if it was a game/machine I was keen to play on myself and I wanted to gauge how long they were likely to be on.
I've mentioned in other posts how it used to be more of an issue to get on a machine as it was more likely to contain a few decent games, which I just don't think is the case nowadays (or in the days of standalone games the games were in general much better than the current ones). In those circumstances you would try to guess whether helping the punters out with a few right answers - I think we'd all agree to give out deliberately wrong answers is just asking for trouble! - would mean that they were more or less likely to finish playing and let you take over.
As for the reverse situation, I do find it annoying if people come and stand right behind me without asking, especially if they do any of the following, in ascending order of annoyance:
(i) ask to help and then shout out answers to obvious questions, often wrongly
(ii) smoke
(iii) press the screen - this rarely happens but it's a capital offence in my book!
On the whole though it's rare to encounter many problems. I do wonder however who your 25 year old soccer genius was - does Helen Chamberlain play the quiz machines I wonder?

I should never have taken that Fotherz character under my wing.unknownpseudonym wrote:re helping on WU: definite bad idea, if people watch the top players they get an idea of how to do it.

That said, I'm of the opinion that being good at something is nothing to crow about if it's the preserve of an exclusive club, so I've put in a lot of effort getting the top word games players in the UK to have a go, just to check that we're really the best.
