Never had the "double press" issue myself. Had plenty of misaligned screens which makes it pretty difficult.

This is more of a "BBQ Suaces" issue.

I've had some £2's and £4's out of this, but only when I've got help in tow. You have to be really precise when touching the books.

Apparently the "bug" is that it displays lots of similar titles to the one you are searching for, e.g. if you are asked to find DOGS it will display books with "D OGS", "DO GS" and "DOG S" on as well as the two real ones. This seems to have been deliberate programming rather than a bug and is surely a good reason for anyone sensible to leave the game well alone.

It also seems ridiculous overkill to me - the game was already very capable of defending itself against two types of players - skilled Q&A players could be hit by lots of impossible questions and anyone very good at the book-spotting could be given more books and less time, assuming they (or someone with them) had been able to get past the impossible questions in the first place.
