You know I'm always on the lookout for a bit of inspiration for a possible game idea. I'm mildly surprised that there aren't more 'arcade style' games on SWP, even if the main premise is answering questions. Maybe a 'Defender' type game where dependant on what alien you blow away you get a different category of question? I don't know, sounds basic, but... Even 'Breakout' could be done quite effectively, possibly...

In my humble opinion the old game QuizVaders was the pinnacle of these - interesting to play, a great 'look and feel', serious questions, a real chance at the top prize if you had the skill and patience, and so on. there have been a few games converted for the novelty market with prize ticket payouts ,for instance breakout has been done so has that old mobile phone game from the nokia 3310 days "snake",there's even one available with a light gun to shoot targets.the 3 examples i gave were all american produced where the market is alot different,they don't have awp for a start.
we used to have a cash prize video game with a medieval cross bow ,it was an egyptian themed shooter ,quite why a crossbow was employed as weaponry i don't know
,anyway you had to shoot various monetary targets, and time bonus thingies and avoid mummies and stuff,the targets could be very hard to hit sometimes and you may have only made it to the endgame with pennies lol.it had a 40 quid jacky iirc,when the timer ran out you was given one more shot to shoot a rope frayed to the last strand lol ,i guess this was it's last line of protection .it did'nt seem unjustly tight on the player though and was quite a fun game to play.

Last strand game was Pharoahs Gold, from Nova then they did Pocketmoney which was based on the early pool games from the eighties, then they did Skill Ball and probably retired!! Not seen any other SWP's from them, they moved to poker games, Casino Big Tony and last was Pokercard. Pity as they did some great SWP's.

getting back to isty's very good topic now.i think the simplicity of alot of old games,i mean really old ones would allow them to be easily incorporated into an swp format.pacman would be another example of one that could be done via a time limit vs points required system ala the space invaders one already mentioned.
iirc tetris was done aswell
i would love to see atari's gauntlet remade in this style ,it's frenetic shoot em up style i loved. robotron 2084 would be nice aswell in its silver anniversary year.
hell, they could even have retro gaming questions thrown into the mix.

Gauntlet was LARGE!!! A pal and I used to play this all the time on the old Atari800xl. I think we got to level 115ish before tiring. Levels started to repeat themselves by then but they might just change the orientation by 90/180/270 degrees...
That 'Death' geezer was a bugger and I always remember the grating noise when he cornered you! I also remember popping downstairs to make a sandwich whilst waiting for all the walls to turn into exits on particularly tedious levels!
I'm sure a similar style of game could be implemented into the SWP world we've all come to love...

Yes they have one in The Red Lion(*) in Hunningham Harry. 20p for fun, 50p for prize. Gary's Dad played it on practice and didn't do that well.
That was in the days when if you were good at something, you could empty it, without having to learn a 35,000 question database that gets updated monthly over The Internet.
Gauntlet? Gauntlet? I had an Atari 800XL and missed out on this gem. Time to fire up the emulator I guess. I remember time bandits. Can't remember Gauntlet. Sounds like I missed out.
