Is it not just bottom of sack? (cul = bottom, sac = sack). Sac is also short for rucksack in french, so it may have something to do with that as well?

Forgot about this question.
I feel a bit guilty about not giving it to Matt, cos in polite society, cul-de-sac does mean "bottom of the bag".
But the literal translation is actually "Arse of the bag".
So I'm going to let MattB have the next shot....

I was sure this was some sort of urban legend, but did they not catapult dead chickens at jet engines to see what would happen if a bird flew into the engine during the flight. Except they used frozen chickens instead which caused a lot of damage.
