No relation with skill4prize... Just a bloke with a good idea (but no quids)... I love online games (worldwinner, king.com) and enjoy playing at the bar with a pint of beer..
Lots of these games have lost the interaction aspect, should you want it at that time. Did you know that when the Yankee "loyd Bushnell" invented Pong in the 70's they attributed THOUSANDS of marriages to the game cuz guys an gals were always playing against one another...
Also playing against someone in a bar in Australia or the USA would take out my competitive fangs...

was it better than playing against the pc?Istenem wrote:about 18 months ago, one of the test itbox issues had a live pool game whereby you'd play against somebody else in another boozer. also battleshits with a similar realtime opponent somewhere else.
to my mind this smelled a bit like fish (smelt a bit like fish would be neater) anyway.
i only saw it in one pub ever (quite near itbox offices as it happens) and when i played it, there was immediately an opponent for me. it didn't make it to general release so presumable it was a failure.
Pongy marriages, brilliant. Bet some of them are having virtual affairs in Second Life though.skilljunky wrote:Did you know that when the Yankee "loyd Bushnell" invented Pong in the 70's they attributed THOUSANDS of marriages to the game cuz guys an gals were always playing against one another...

It would take something for SWP quiz developers to come up with a game that had such a nuptial effect. Maybe they could call it The Mating Game, oh darn...
One idea that wandered across my mind was to have a real phone-a-friend on Millionaire - connects up to server, select an online helper (who can declare a real area of expertise, unlike that crooked politician Norman), success rate displayed; incentives to give right answer, etc.

This:
1) you win a game of xxx and are given a randomly generated code, pub and time eg. 3921, Hamilton Hall Spoons, London, 7:30pm, Sunday 4th Dec.
2) You turn up for your appointment at the correct time -> a window pops up, you enter your code and collect your 'surprise winnings': anything from 50p to £5000000.
Just imagine having travelled 800 miles to your appointment with 2 minutes on the clock, waiting for a drippy couple to vacate the itbox so you can be there to input your code - the excitement!

I just 'can't' see this sort of thing working in pubs (in relation to the original post) although how about '2-player' versions of some games on the same box? Not sure which ones though, probably wouldn't suit quizzes, although...
"And do you ever contradict yourself, Minister?" "Well, yes and no..."

But really... the first whiff of money to be made and you'd be round every machine like a fly round a shite.roberto la vigna wrote:I think Word Up is somewhat underexploited - it could be massively popular, such is its accessibility and scope.fotherz wrote:I don't know why they haven't put this on the internet already.
Not that I blame you, but it's nigh on impossible to make a tournament which will appeal to both munters and experts alike. Unless of course, you make 1 in 100 games a "payer" in which case you might as well make it an AWP.

Well yes, that's true - I was thinking more of getting Microsoft to buy Word Up and make it one of their default games, like Minesweeper or Solitaire.Cardinal Sin wrote:But really... the first whiff of money to be made and you'd be round every machine like a fly round a shite.
With a few simple modifications WU could also become a language-learning educational game or Scrabble-training tool, opening up large new markets.
Interesting things could also be done with board sizes or letter distribution, strengthening the puzzle aspect.
Basically, as far as I've found, it seems to appeal more to novice word game players than Scrabble, so should be at least as big (especially since it is a single-player game).
