Spellbound

anyone played this? It looked kind of old.

In a fruit machine cabinet but actually a hangman game.

You pick a category and the reels spin in 3 letters. You then pick a reel or hit a reject all button. If you reject all and a letter is right then a life is lost.

Took 20quid then it went tight and became boring.

i've never seen one but i pay little attention to anything that looks like a fruit machine.

The one I played was in Queen's Union in Belfast. Sits alongside an old school Gamebox with Pepsi Chart on it.

Last time I was in the lovely environs of Govan Cross, they had one of these queer machines. Wasn't sure if it was a quiz machine or a fruit machine and as there were a scally of sengas bashing buttons and remonstrating with it, I didn't bother investigating any further.

Only a fiver Sir David, as I havent quite found the 'knack' for it that everyone on here seems to have.

Did see a lad rinse it later on in the evening though.

I've played this thing loads ...

Never potted it, but got to the final level before the JP on several occasions. You can play it on 25p stake with a £20 JP, or 50p stake with a £40 JP. It's literally a game of Hangman, in a Genesis cabinet. It's new-ish - there were about 10 of them lined up beside the escalator at ATEI in January this year.

You basically hit a subject from the top, the _ _ _ _ _ appears on one alpha, and a hint on a second alpha.

The reels spin, three different letters appear on the reels, you can either choose one of them using the corresponding hold buttons (if you think that letter is in the word) or hit 'Reject All'. Wrong choices add limbs to the hangman. If you're really struggling, it throws in a Mystery from time to time, which are the obvious things like Hey Presto! (Complete Phrase), Add Letters, That's Magic! (numerous hints), Lifeline (gives you back some limbs), Subjective (skill selection on the subjects) and so on.

The answers tend to be rather obscure, hence it can be very frustrating - and there're some glitches in there too (such as the clue 'River' - where the answer is 'Steve Backley').

Yeah we put a quid in and played 50p version. Took £20 very very easily but then played another 5 or so games where it gave super-obscure answers. So I'm guessing we caught it flush for one game and one game only.

Don't worry about this one, Ross. There was no special trick involved with the Pepsi Chart game, just a lot of hard work learning enough of the answers and that was only possible when (a) there were lots of them around (including on the ItBox) and (b) lots of them were in pay mode so you weren't too far out of pocket as you built up that knowledge.

To learn how to win on these now, given how few of them there are around, would be impossible (financially at least).
