I hate playing with my friends...

Post by rocket »

Do any of you find that playing with your mates who have played less poker than you is just more trouble than its worth? I'm not being arrogant, but I play quite a lot of online poker, mainly now in freerolls or small buy in tournaments - just to pass the time when I'm sat around not doing much. But I also watch a lot on TV and try to pick up tips from here and the odd other forum when I can.

But it just gets to me that they call with absolutely anything - the first sign of any picture card in their hand (no matter what else they have) and they almost start to have an orgasm. I must have been knocked out in at least the last 4 or 5 tourneys by people calling with jack shit and hitting stuff on the flop.

Playing yesterday - we start with 500 chips each and we were a fair way into the tournament, with blinds at 35/70. Three of us left (top 2 get paid) and I was fairly short stacked. I was small blind and dealt pocket nines. Not the best hand, but the third player folded so I chose to raise by twice the big blind (total of 210) hoping to at least pick up the blinds. The big blind thinks, then calls.

He didn't call straight away, so I put him on a mid strength hand - I'm thinking maybe Q - 10, J - 9, OS, something like that.

The flop comes 8 - 8 - 6. Great I'm thinking....I reckon hes got higher cards than 8 but I still have top pair. So I go all in. He calls....and whats he got, K - 8 off suit!! Trip 8's takes me out of the tourney.

ARRRRRGHHH. Is it just me or what??? I mean would you be calling with that hand and a raise to 3 x the blind? And this isn't just a one off - the same guy also took me out yesterday by calling an all in on the turn with a straight draw (whaddya know he hits it on the river) and he's also taken me out in the past when he called my pocket aces with K - 5 OS and hit two pair on the flop.

I've always said I go out and play with my mates for a laugh and the social side - but it's really getting on my tits. They call with anything and play nearly every hand - another of my mates played for the first 40 minutes of a tourney yesterday without folding a hand!

Poker is a game of luck as well as skill you have to remember!

Today we had a 7 player battle with 1st 3 places paying, got to the last 3, and got A/Q on the Button, I wasn't hugely stacked, so went on the steal - all in, got called by the chip leader who had J/2 Suited..

He hit a flush on the flop... Although my queen has a Spade no more came... sickening really..

Then hopped onto 'thats magic' and got £35 from 3 cards (7s / joker?) on the left lighting up.. sweet!

You made a few mistakes, firstly it was too cheap not to call. I win more calling the blinds with crap like k4 and hitting two pair on the flop and watching ppl go allin with aa or ak when the hit top pair. Secondly being a poor player you needed to have imagined that he would have hit something or he wouldnt still be in the pot. He could have had a8 and you were always on a lose. If you bet and he calls slow down, think why he called your bet? Pocket 9's are ok but better for an all in hand to steal the blinds. Otherwise you might as well limp in with them.

Rememer pocket cards lose some of their value on the flop, and ultimately it is only one pair

Hope this helps

Thanks for the advice Dibble, it is appreciated.

I was hoping to steal the blinds without having to go all in - I am 99% sure that he would have even called an all in with his cards. Between a lot of them there seems to an attitude that if someone goes all in when they're short stacked they're just bluffing - and the number of times they say 'oh i might as well call' - irrespective of what hand they might havw!

It is often true.

Possibly....I would say more often than not they've hit at least a mid strength hand and see that its worth a punt. Even if they are though, is it worth calling with feck all just for the sake of it?!

yeah, depends on your position and opponents..

I do kind of get the 'reading players' part of it, playing with friends I got a good understanding of how they all play, and who's most likely to call and all in when im moving with a short stack.

But its all down to luck really, as they might be sat there with a monster hand!

I seem to always trip up against friends and do a lot better when playing strangers at the casino.

I play against my mates for fun more than cash, we maybe chuck in £20 for the game and split between the top 2/3. I went all in with 7-2os in a friendly game and i even told him what i had! He proceeded to call with A-7 and sure enough the 2 came out on the river

Of course in a serious game im not going all in with that hand, but i think between friends the play is a lot different?

Well, I just lost it completely...

Playing a 8 way tourney tonight with friends and my brother. Down to four, and all in we go (top 3 places pay here)

I had QQ

My bro calls with Q9...... Gotcha!

Flop comes 9/8/9.....

I couldn't beleive it, tonight is life changing, I never want to talk to that c*nt again. Infact he is going to manchester tomorrow. someone shoot the f*cker. He does this thing regularly to me, lucky tw*t.. Tonight took the biscuit completely, I was literally over there to beat the sh*t out of him, but refrained due to having friends around.. cost mer about £40 that, and when im skint thats an important amount..

Im absolutely raging and depressed as f*ck.. I cannot beleive that happened.. What a tw*t he is.
