Old £20 notes...

Any one got an exact date yet on these officialy leaving GB circulation as legal tender, only twice today I have been told by shop owners that they are no longer accepting them as banking them is becoming a nightmare?...

They will always be legal tender, unless we change to the Euro.
Tell them that it's got the Queen's head on it, and if they don't accept it she will have theirs on a stick.

They will go from circulation though yes?.. Like the old £5 and £10 did, I know you can change them in the post office, but by law now shops arnt allowed to hand them as change, just wondering about the £20's, as I was paid a job and most of them were the old style...
Even the cash machine "Nat West" dosn't dispence them any more?

They can still bank them though, so they are just being difficult.

As someone who works in retailm I can honestly say the old £20 is still legal tender. I have not heard anything yet about the cut off date, so I would say it still is quite a way off. The only thing I can think of, as to your problems, is that the old 20 is becoming rarer and the ones that are about are more beaten up so the shopkeeper would be more likely to dismiss them as fakes and give you the excuse that they are no longer legal because they would think it is easier.
As for the "Queens Head" nonsense dont believe it. Isle Of Man, Jersey coins etc are NOT legal here although alot of places accept them simply because they are similar to our coins.
I believe Canada still has the Queens head on thier coins.

Bank of England notes remain redeemable from the BoE for ever. It's just when they cease to be legal tender you are no longer obliged to accept them in settlement of a debt or contract.
The Elgar £20s are still legal tender and no date for the ceasing to be so has yet been announced. No one has any legal grounds to refuse them.

I work in a bank and can honestly say have not heard a single think about them not being legal tender. anyone that says they are having trouble banking them is bullshitting you.
