Council Tax. Argh

Hi chaps,

Anyone know if there is a time limit on collecting council tax? (like there is on private debt 6-7 years). I only ask cos I'm likely to get hit with a 2,500 quid bill from 10 years ago from when I was a student (it isn't all mine, and I wasn't there for all that time - but there were non-students living there at the time so I was still liable).

I'm not in touch with the other people who will owe the money any more so I'm rather eager not to have to pay it if I don't have to. However, I am probably the only person the council can get hold of (by sheer bad luck they've got in touch with me) so I'll probably be liable for the full whack.

Anybody know the legality of this?

Cheers :)

Bunch of arse isn't it? Nine years ago I was only working part-time therefore I recieved Council Tax Benefit which coverwed the majority of the bill...or so I thought. Last year I recieved a letter saying I had been overpayed C.T Benefit to the tune of just under £700. Nice. Anyway I tried challenging it but I had no proof of income, paperwork etc (I only keep records as far back as 5 years), i had to relent and came to an agreement of £10 p/m - fuck 'em, its interest free and I ain't killing myself to pay it, robbing, scummy, horrible cunts.

These days I should pay it once a year and have done with it, but I don't. Instead I go to my nearest paypoint with a barcode and pay it as late as possible. If the payment doesn't clear in time they try and charge you an extra £40 and threaten you with Debt Collection Agencies, very petty. But why should I give them a lump sum to gain interest with? If everybody paid their Council Tax in total as soon as they get their bill the Government would be creaming it in!

As far as I'm concerned I pay Council Tax to have my bins emptied and so senoir officials recieve £100k+ salaries, at least Dick Turpin wore a mask ffs.
