Anyone ever been to Egypt?

Post by ROSSKEEN »

Going with the boys in November to Sharm El Sheikh for a week of just lazing about (i.e. not a club 30 style hol). Any tips?

I was looking forward to snorkelling but a few websites I've seen are like:

"This fish, this fish and this fish will sting you and you will die" etc etc.

And all these fish seem to live right on the shore!

If you go in a shop they will assume you are buying and lock you in untill you buy

went for my honeymoon in july,

where exactly are you staying?

we went to sharm, it was hothothot.. and fucking annoying..

if you get the shits, macdonalds deliver....

all inclusive beer (stellar) tastes like shit... the spirits are like turps...

hard rock and a couple of others in naarma bay are ok, but london prices for booze...

many poisonous fish, but i *think* the resorts are clear of them

the fucking shops are horrific, literally say no, more rudely than polite as soon as somone comes toward you...

and dont let them offer you tea, if you say you dont like it, they have pop too, just tell them you havent got time...

if you're in a group of lads, then it'll probably be ok...

and a full days drive from sharm el sheik..

if you go to the pyramids, the egyptians have a massive slum/camp right next to the pyramids.. like, instantly next to it, no fence, nothing..

they send their kids out, to beg for money/food

they offer to take photos of you with your camera then try to charge you for the camera back.. i heard from other travelers that this was done by all of them... even the police... so you cant do anything apart from give them the money...

dont get money changed in england, the exchance rate is way way better over there.... 10 to 1 egyptian to english.. over here you get about 8 to 1

take a few £1's with them, they like our money better than theirs..

it was good, but they prey on people too much

blokes with a woman are targets for pressure sales, they ask a simple question, then you're baited. they are so good at making you feel like you shouldnt walk away...

stupid thing, i actually wanted to buy something from one of them..
i did, and i had "stratigicly" only got x amount of money visable in my wallet, i spent that in one shop and the guy still tried to sell me more, they work in networks, three or four of them, if one catches a customer, they show you around all four shops, and vice versa

i would go back, but only on a piss up holiday.. that way, no suveniour shopping, nothing like that at all...

aparently the larger cities and tourist spots are riddled with pickpockets too...
so, no matter how gay it looks, buy an expencive money belt with the cash side on the inside, and dont carry much money in each place/pocket..

if you go in a shop, make sure you have about 10/20/30/50 uk££ in each pocket, so you can pretend you have no other money...

and again... dont get involved in "tea" no matter how inoccent it seems..

I havnt been to Egypt, but i do snorkel; antigua kenya cuba tunisia etc and as long as you are proficient and arent an extra from jaws, you should be ok (otherwise why would they let you do it?)
If you are not proficient and on a reef DO NOT WEAR FLIPPERS as they damage the reef.
Fish rarely attack unless annoyed (sorry mrs irwin)
Get an insurance which includes watersports (some think snorkelling is a sport)
One problem may be jellyfish but you should see them clearly underwater
The biggest obstacle you will have to tackle is the Arabs themselves.... keep your wits about you fella but have a great time
