Nope, it's not a joke.
'Crocodile Hunter' Steve Irwin killed
Steve Irwin, the quirky Australian naturalist who won worldwide acclaim, was killed by a stingray barb through the chest while diving off Australia's northeast coast, emergency officials and witnesses said.
"Steve was hit by a stingray in the chest," said local diving operator Steve Edmondson, whose Poseidon boats were out on the Great Barrier Reef when the accident occurred on Monday.
"He probably died from a cardiac arrest from the injury," Edmondson said.
Police and ambulance officials later confirmed Irwin had died and said his family had been advised.
Irwin, 44, was killed while filming an underwater documentary off Port Douglas.
Irwin had been diving off his boat "Croc One" near Batt Reef northeast of Port Douglas. A helicopter had taken paramedics to nearby Low Isles where Irwin was taken for medical treatment; but he was dead before they arrived, police said.

Yup, heard that when I woke up this morning.
Not that it is any way funny, but it's 'the way things go' when you spend your life wrestling Crocodiles and survive, that you end up killed when you're just enjoying some leisure time...
I heard that it's almost unheard of to get killed by a Stingray?

Ahh thats a shame I liked him I thought he was really good.
People are saying that he torments the animals and that he had it coming etc, but I dont think he done that, well, maybe he done it with snakes but he only done that to show how they attack, other than that he loved all them animals, ahh its such a shame

Most people get stung in the legs and feet when they accidentally stand on them. However, getting one in the chest where most of your vital organs hang about is quite often fatal.

That's a real shame! :x
I love watching his programmes. I don't think there was anyone quite that passionate about wildlife whilst on TV. You could tell he was genuinely interested in the animals he was filing. Here's another article:

Another sad loss

Maybe I am being cynical here but this story was the headline on Radio 5 this morning and Nicky Campbell spent fifteen minutes rabbitting on. Sure it is sad news but hundreds are dying in Iraq, kids are starving to death in Africa and the UK is plagued by crime, terrorism and social meltdown. If you play with fire you will get burnt.
Next up. Mountaineer falls to death, dictator assassinated and Indy driver smashes into wall and is dead.

Harry2 - That's exactly what I heard this morning. I do like Campbell and 'Foggers' but they can indeed rabbit on!!
