george to be honest m8 ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, you have to give respect to the film makers for the shear amount of work that went into it ,,,,,,,,,,, and to be fair the action scenes are breath taking ,,,,,, but in a tongue in cheek massively over the top fashion ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, the story however was flat , uninspired and disjointed ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, sprinkle that with the whooooo yeah corny american unfunny humor ,,,,,,,,,,, and bottom line its a mess ,,,,,,,,,, just like the second one in my opinion ,,,,,,,,,,,,, all style over substance ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, great visuals , poor film . ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, a true popcorn movie ,,,,,,,,, not a film . ,,no need to take your brain along with you to see it ,,,,,,,,,,,

dont bother with green lantern either ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, falls into the same category , amazing visuals once again ,,,,, and respect given for the work and effort ,,,,,,,,,,, but ultimately a mess .

x-men first class , is great (but only for those that have seen the others , because it ties them together really well)

i thought thor was superb

the green hornet lugs (did you meen green lantern ?) isnt a superhero film ,,,,,,,,, its a rehash of the bruce lee tv series ,,,,,,,,,,, and is a travesty ,,,,,,, the scene where there driving half a car round the office block did it for me ,,,,,,,,, total cash in shit ,,,,, wasted opportunity.

since were talking films ,,,,,,, im eagerly awaiting matilda's take on all the above

the real problem for me with the green hornet was the direction it took .

the original series played it as a semi- serious crime drama , that coupled with bruce lee's screen presence and lethal ability , etc ,,,,,,,,,,, you just new the green hornet would be safe with the invincible kato by his side , you were never in doubt that no matter the odds in a fight scene they were going to come out on top.

the new movie had an opportunity to launch a new international martial arts star to western audiences ,,,,,,,,,,,,, (afterall , how long can jackie chan , jet li , donny yen etc carry on ?)

instead we get jay chou in an instantly forgetable performance , (not his fault ) , in a run of the mill by the numbers comedy ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, not that bad as you say lugs m8 ,,,,,,,,, but if handled correctly ,,,,, could have been truly special.

Barry Normans secret lovechild is back online.....well sort of lol.

I moved house on the 22nd and when SKY came to re-install us we found out there was no chance whatsoever of getting a signal, so I had to go back to Virgin and they can't install us til August 11th!!! I went a week without tinterweb (Iphone broke 6 weeks ago and we struggle to get a 3G signal in the new house on the Mrs') so I bit the bullet and got a dongle with 3gb of usage to tide us over. No Xbox Live though.

Anyway, as much as I'm a film fan and somebody who owns most Marvel/DC/Superhero movies I can't comment on any of the above because I haven't seen them!!! I've been staying in a heck of a lot recently being a full time Dad and believe me, when the Mrs gets in I'm too bushwhacked to do anything else.

I do look forward to the releases of Thor, First Class etc on BluRay and once I've seen them I will give my opinion, but I've heard nothing but good things from friends about them.

I could download them I guess, but I only download films which I know I'm gonna struggle to find.

I watched Thor last night and it was very, very good. A proper feel good superhero film and one of the better films I've seen this year.

Unknown, The Mechanic and Hobo With a Shotgun were the last 3 Blurays I watched and they were 'ok' but I'm really starting to think jump from DVD to Bluray isn't all that.

Although Tangled is stunning.

Thor - 9/10.

Brings back memories of having a successful slotting outing on the way to Heathrow for a flight to New York. Obviously had to take the coinage out(probs about £130 ) to get through the xray. US immigration officials at JFK (who aren't the most broad minded of individuals-) were particularly bemused.

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, that all depends on your a/v setup ,,,,,,, what ya got?

so with that in mind , heres a little , pointless , boring , but hopefully informative guide .

first of all , im not including any high end golddiamondharmonkardonddennon 20k for a piece of cable millionaire's kit ,,,,,,, just sensible mainstreem ,,,,,,,

***TV***

theres a bewildering choice of screens out there for every budget , but beware , theres a reason why that 32 inch alba/goodmans/wharfdale set is only £200 ,,,,,,,, and the 40 inch models only £350 ,,,,,,,,,, ok so you may be getting a 1080p full hd panel , but look a little deeper and you'll notice theres very little in the way of on board processing , colours are bland , brightness is week , and worst of all there is often lag , especially on fast moving action scenes and football,,,,,,,,,,,,and good full hd images take a good tv to process them smoothly in fact if this is your budget ,,,,, i personally would sooner sacrifice screen size , and opt for a better brand , ( something like the 24inch sony bravia kdl 24 model for £350 in currys, or a good samung ) ,,,,,,,, rather than that 46inch smeeerfest from sanyo for the same cash ,,,,,,,,,,

***blu ray player***

again , a bewildering choice ,,,,,, from lg budget decks for £69.99 upwards to mid range panasonics for £600 ,,,,,,, to high end dennon or cambridge audio for £1800 +' ,,,,,,,, again ,,,,,, there are differences , from colour bleading and pixel processing to build quality and such like , but ,,,,,,,,, the differences arnt as noticeable as some nut job audiphills would have you believe ,,,,,,,,,, and certainly doesn't warrant the same pondering and decision making that you need to makeover the screen ......... i cant stress enough that even a 2k player will look shit on a goodmans telly ........ but you can get stunning results from a cheap range player on a good screen ....... again buy the best within your budget . ,,,,,,,,, best to stick with sony panasonic samsung etc.

as a side note , we have to mention the ps3 ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, when it was first released it was considered cutting edge , (blu ray players around that time were £700 plus),,,,,,,,,,, now a lot of so called experts compare it roughly with the budget players of today,,,,,,,,,, but with continued support in the way of firmware downloads etc ,,,,,,,,, not to mention all its other multi media capabilities ,,,,,,,,,,,, it should still be considered on your shortlist even if your a non gamer (photo management , music apps , web browser)

lastly

*** surround sound***

for me ,,,,,,,, almost as important as the screen ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, from crystal clear subtle tense pin drop heart beat moments ,,,,,, to all out hollywood explosions ........ ,,,, .

ok so you could buy that £40 asda jobby ,,,,,,,,, but just you dare turn the volume up beyond half way ,,,, and you'll watch those speakers vibrate down the street lol .

its richersounds , you will need for this ,,,,,,,,,, but again be sensible , think of the size of your living room ,,,,,,,,,, theres little point in spending 8 grand on an amp and speaker package to fill out wembly ,,,,,,,,, if your living room is the size of your toilet . but be prepared to spend 300 plus . ,,,,,,,,,,,, you want the sound to be concise , clear , involving , and with enough grunt for that next building arnie is about to blow up.

the other way of course is to buy a one box do it all solution from argos/currys etc (blu player with built in amp , n speaker package) ,,,,,,,,,,,,, again ,,,,,,, seperates is a better option ,,,,,,,,,, but a one box solution does take the hassle out of everything.

with the right setup ,,,,,,, even some crap films become better ,,,,,,,,, because whilst the lame plot/story doesn't change ,,,,,,,, the visual's and sonic's can add so so much to the atmosphere .

matilda m8 ,,,,,,,,,,, you say your not convinced in the leep of quality between dvd and blu ray ,,,,,,,,, it all depends on set up ,,,,,,,,,,,,,, if you ever pass through leicester , pop in mine and i will change your perceptions .

58 inch perfect motion screen £1400 ,,,,,,,,,, samsung surround sound kit £550 ,,,,, and a ps3 ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, my set up is decisively mid range ,,,,,,,,,,,,, but it will blow your doors off.

I'm currently using a 40" Samsung Series 5 TV, full 1080p etc, mainly bought for gaming as so many people recommend them in any 'What TV should I buy for my 360?' thread lol. My Bluray player is again, a Samsung, model no. I couldn't tell you but it only cost £130, so its nothing special. I don't have a surround sound system. I know I should, but the living room is pretty minimalistic and loudness echoes in a big way!!! Surround sound doesn't improve picture quality though.

You see, my biggest moan is some of the films which I have watched that were produced, directed and released during the Bluray era haven't blown me away and its a bit of a disappointment. I also know films that were release 10 years ago aren't going to be Bluray quality because they weren't filmed in Bluray - they are essentially DVDs printed onto Bluray discs for people like me who are making the transition and rebuilding their collection of favourite films, I understand that.

The only exception to the rule may be Star Wars as they could have cashed in as soon as Bluray became popular, but to their credit they never and they probably painstakingly remastered all six films as best possible.

I'm not saying Bluray is bad its just the last few films I watched weren't fantastically better than upscaled DVDs apart from Tangled which had the 'wow' factor and Spartacus looks very crisp indeed. I have Insidious, Green Hornet, Bad Lieutenant, Limitless, The Town, 22 Bullets, Grown Ups and London Boulavard, all on Bluray, all waiting to be watched - lets hope my mind is changed.

One thing I will say is when I first got my Xbox 360 I was playing it on a CRT standard def tele and when I got my first LCD HDtv I replayed Halo 3 and my jaw almost hit the floor!!!!! Mahoosive difference in quality compared to the DVD > Bluray leap.

Also, my daughter has a 22" Baird LCD HDtv in her room, may even be 1080p too, and the picture quality on that is top notch for cheaper make.
