"I'm not a racist but..."
Er, yes, actually you are.
skin colour is a mere pigment variation.
When cultural difference between different coloured groups is treated and more significant than between different same colour groups, that is racist.
merely commenting onor discussing cultural difference is not. Being affraid to do the latter, for fear of being seen as the former is counter productive and (though I HATE the phrase) is "political correctness gone mad."
I would love to live in a colour blind and most importantly secular global society. Probably won't happen in mine, or even my kids life times, but it'll happen one day.
Bring on the New World Order I say (fire in the hole. I can hear Mike's keyboard starting to rattle)

That is why I don't take on board any celebrity news at all. If it doesn't affect someone I know / love / care for, then they have my sympathy, but that's where it ends - I'm too busy with the people that mean something to me...i dont know her, she doesnt know me...i dont care.
Racism: Hmm, We're all humans on this world together - let's just get on with it. However, I do get a bit annoyed at how constantly (specifically in this country) minorities seem to get the rub of the green 99%+ of the time.
A different tact, but... ...we get an e-mail that comes around at least twice a year where I work, from the 'Gay & Lesbian Advisory Service' that announces a 'Gay & Lesbian Disco'. I'd hazard a guess that if someone were to send around a global e-mail (about 1800+ people work at my establishment) saying 'Heterosexual Disco' there'd be uproarious (heh) response!!!
"And do you ever contradict yourself, Minister?" "Well, yes and no..."
but no one's being discriminated against for being a straight, white, nothern European man.
gay rights and black pride is NOT the same as excluding homosexuals and repatriating third generation ethic minorities and it's pretty naive to suggest any similarity.
before we can live in an equal society, people need to be able to publicly take pride in their own diversity. That means people previously traeted by society as less have to be encouraged to celebrate those things that set them apart.

Pete. I hear what you are saying but as a white , heterosexual, christian and IF I was a policeman I wouldn't be allowed to join either the National Black Police Association or The Muslim Police Association. Society needs to be inclusive, not exclusive. When we have people here advocating stoning adulterers to death , the killing of gays and subjugating of women then that is a step too far.

True, but let's face it, it does go a little too far sometimes. By making special exceptions for minorities, you are reminding them that's exactly what they are... Equal treatment for ALL, else it'll never cease to be an issue...

I've never met a member of an ethnic minority or alternative sexual persuasion express a desire for "positive dicsrimination."
What they want is a level playing field where the best man or woman gets the job / house / benefit / etc depending on individual merits and not because of belonging to any statistical group

because those groups are there to address the problem that, while recruitment of black and ethnic officers (B&E officers is the term used) is improving, the promotion rates are disproportionately low and the leaving rate is disproportionately high. These wellfare groups are there to redress the balance, NOT to infringe on white officers rights.harry2 wrote:Pete. religious extremism shouldn't be tolerated, but as you can probably tell from my desire for a secular world, I consider ALL religion to be holding us back from true development as a species.

BRAVO TO THE BBC.
I think the BBC have done exactly what they set out to do - cause a bit of controversy and I think they've been clever in doing so. They've shown how narrow minded some of the British public can be and at the same time they have made their flagging flagship show the focal talking point of the nation, giving them considerable publicity. No doubt every forum in the country which has a general section has a thread very similar to this one.
Personally I couldn't care less about the colour of someones skin, their sexuality, religious beliefs etc - its nothing to do with me, I have more important things to worry about. There are racists/bigots who frequent this site, they know who they are, but thats there prerogative, isn't it? The only people who I am prejudice against are people who knock on your door asking for money, charity collectors - can't fookin stand 'em. Why don't they understand that I will never give my bank details to a complete stranger?
Talking about charity collectors.....I had one around here the other night asking for donations for the local sperm bank, I gave her a right mouthful, I tell ya!!!!
