I once bought 10 fevernova footballs(anyone who's used one will know how good they are) as they were £5 each,
Get my stack of coins out and the chavvy girl's like "what's that?!"
So i informed her that it was £50, and she was like "you're not paying in coins are you?" and took the coins looking at me like i'd shot her mother or something.

You're all missing a trick here.
You should pay everything with your credit card (and i mean everything), then go to the bank and pay your monthly statement in full over the counter with pound coins.
The bank won't charge you to change the coins as you are paying a bill and you are not lodging them to your account.
Obviously bag the coins before you get there or the staff may get pissed off.
I have paid 4 figure bills this way without comment (sometimes they don't even weigh the bags!!!). I do tend to alternate between branches each month just in case though.
The beauty of this is that you select a card with 1% cash back and you save 1% on everything you spend (2% if you shop in Tesco's with a club card) - it does all add up over the course of a year.
The only problem may be getting a credit card if you don't have a day job with any source of regular income.
You also probably need to get a card from an actual bank rather than the MBNA ones otherwise the bank may charge to accept payment if it is not their card.
Here endeth the lesson.
On the rare occassions I do pay in cash (usually airport taxis for some reason) they always ask if I've been singing.
