the trouble with older films is this ,,,,,,, no matter the techniques that todays technicians use to try to bring it to hi def blu ray ,,,,,,,,,,,,,, the source material will always limit what they can do .
your screen is fine matilda m8 ,
wether you like the film or not ,,,,,(subjective ),,,,,, try avatar ,,,,,,,,,, if that doesn't re-afirm your faith in blu ray , nothing will ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, its a technical master class ,,,,,,,,, with an amazing soundtrack ,,,,,,,, ,,,,,,,, the question is could you get round the mrs to let you have surround sound installed for christmas ??? :P

not quite right mate... depends if you want to see the film in the manner it was produced or an updated version with re-made enhancement?trayhop123 wrote:the trouble with older films is this ,,,,,,, no matter the techniques that todays technicians use to try to bring it to hi def blu ray ,,,,,,,,,,,,,, the source material will always limit what they can do .
anything pre-digital recording will be "better" quality pre-dvd (digital recording) due to the fact that its sound and light "images" captured in a "natural" way.. the transfer to digital media means it has to lose quite a bit of its flow soundwise and visually
to picture an analogue recording, imagine a hilly sunset.. a flow of green hills the soundwaves and light are able to naturally flow as they are
now draw the same thing to digitally create a "bitrate".. you end up with a jumpy blocky scene much like the new-york skyline intro to frasier on tv..
the recording of the original media is transfered from a light/sound recording, to two pixilated and digital parts that are syncronised by the player... lag and hardware affects the reproduction on your set..
bright white to pitch black ratio playback with digital picture and sound will NEVER compare to cinema screen quality.. regardless of the lines, ink-spots and interference during playback in the cinema..
theroeticly cinema screen resolution is up to 4096/3112 compared to hd at up to 1920/1080 and this is the current maximum, terrestrial and premium paid tv services are implementing this as a secondary standard.. it will be a long long time before they work out a way of providing the next step up... your tv, bluray nor pc can mimic this resolution.
old films are taken from tape in exactly the same way as new films, as long as they are stored correctly they can transfer them easily.. the problem is, if they can, they will cheaply take the track from the dvd instead of the original 35mm, and stretch the image to the new format without updating the image at all... you will notice this on your tv... but others probably wont due to screen size, refresh and black/whites... although to notice this, you would need access to the original tape mastercopy.
however, digitally produced films, animated or heavily covered in special effects do not follow this rule.. for example, the simpsons film will only ever be able to scaled digitally, as it was created digitally.
you are right about the rest of your post, about paying money for the
gear.. but as long as there is no "lag" from bluray to tv, you will get used to the sound/light within a few days of getting the new gear.. you have to match up the capability of your stuff.. id be inclined to tell people to not buy a "hd ready" setup.. but a "full hd" and make sure you are buying the latest of the range.. aim for a LG or samsung, and if you have more money to spend, buy a sony... if you have more money to spend.. dont spend it on a tv... i know of someone who bought a £40k bang&oufson.. wtf?? why??

im not so sure either ,,,,,,,,,,,, but i welcome your post spyder m8 .
i think i get what your trying say ,? that ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, if we take a high end digital camera with 20m pixels for instance and take a picture of a mountain ,,,,,,,,, then take the shot from a standard film camera ,,,,,,,,,,,, that the film camera still comes out better , because the film camera isn't made up of pixels ,,,,,,, and therefore no matter how dense in pixels a digital camera may be , it still cant compare . ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, forgive me if im wrong , but i think thats your argument .
it may be true in theory ,,,,,,,,,, but in practice it holds no water .
because over time , there is extensive print damage to film ,,,,,,,, sun damage , grit ,dirt etc ,,,,,,,,,, things that cant happen to something stored digitaly
a select few of the original james bond films have been given the blu ray makeover , with production notes in the sleeves and with extra documentaries etc ,,,,,,,, detailing the painstaking frame by frame process they undertook. ,,,,really did a propper job ,,,,, and the result is mostly great ,,,,,,,,,,, mostly , it still suffers in parts , the odd blemishes etc , soft scenes etc ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, but overall very good . ,,,,,,,,,,,
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, but compare that to casino royal/quantam of solace ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, the difference is massive ,,,,,,,,,,,no problems whatsoever , unbelievable quality .
so i have to stick to my original comment ,,,,,,,,,,,,,, theres only so much they can do with original source material .
and , i have to disagree with the cinema point ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, whether its the darkness or the projectors used , i dont know ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, but a blu ray at home looks loads better than the same film at the cinema .
infact a lot of cinemas are converting to digital now ,
its nice to be nostalgic (hell im the biggest retro lover) ,,,,,,,,,,,, in the film vs digital debate , like some purists prefer vinyl over cd ,saying it sounds better etc ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, but the reality is , in truth digital looks and sounds far superior ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, and we have to embrace the future.
ps , show me a (pre digitaly filmed ) film that has been given the blu ray treatment etc ,,,,,,, that can look and sound as good as ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, avatar , star trek, the dark knight,
theres a challenge ,,,,,,,???,,,,,,,,,,, not a chance in hell lol
