From the Wikipedia article on mp3s (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MP3):
"Because MP3 is a lossy format, it is able to provide a number of different options for its "bit rate" — that is, the number of bits of encoded data that are used to represent each second of audio. Typically, rates chosen are between 128 and 320 kilobit per second. By contrast, uncompressed audio as stored on a compact disc has a bit rate of 1411.2 kbit/s (16 bits/sample × 44100 samples/second × 2 channels)."
Just carried out a blind hearing test with my bro, who isn't a committed audiophile by any stretch, with 3 lots of songs in 128, 192 and 256 (all encoded using windows media player). Here's how he rated them:
1st trial: best: 256 second best: 128 third best: 192
2nd trial: best: 256 second best: 192 third best: 128
3rd trial: best: 192 second: 256 third: 128
This suggests that, at least, 256 and 128 can't be confused, quality-wise.
The main thing for me is that 256 seems to add weight and definition to bass. You guys should compare kick drums and basslines between 128 and 256 on your PCs...
What was the last album you bought?
