hmm.. nice question, and one to which I have no idea.

However, that has never stopped me in the past, so I'm going to guess it's derived from the obsolete Persian word "sochkur", whose meaning has been forgotton through the mists of time.

Is it derived from an onomatopoeic word for the sound the players make when they spit every three seconds? ;)

Didn't football used to be called "Association Football" to distiuguish it from Rugby Football? I think soccer was thus a contraction of "Association Rules".
Sadly I no longer have all the issues of "Shoot!" I bought between 1971 and 1975 so I can't check it :)

that'll do ya

when footy got all proper and the FA was introduced football was called Association football.

Association eventually got bastardized into soccer.

Whats worse is that its us brits that did the bastardizing and created that wonderful word which the americans now use for the beautiful game

That was lucky - first time I've found the quiz :)

Another "wordy" one then. Which common English word is an anagram of "roast mules"?

Oh, it's good but it's not right. Actually it's not that good really  Perhaps we ought to have a sub-quiz to see who can suggest the best definition of an ultra moses.

Answer is a single word.

tka - that's it. It was indeed somersault. I'm not sure if soulmaster is a word but perhaps it should be :D
Sorry for the delay btw; a LONG day at work!
