You're getting close (at least with the first few letters) with Cardiff... but it's only got a population of about 20000.

Carnarvon?

(In the Sun's gay holiday destinations, did they include Blackpoof?)

Different spelling, but UP has it!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carmarthen
The name became Carmarthen (Caer Fyrddin) in Welsh. Someone may have treated the name as meaning "Royal residence of a man called Myrddin".
Myrddin was latinised by Geoffrey of Monmouth to Merlinus, which was then shortened.

Over to you (P)...

apologies for my spelling and inability to remember any other gay holiday destinations. anyway number next:

the word cob can refer to three different species of animal; which?

I seem to remember one being a type of pony...? And I think another's a kind of seabird.

pony (or any small equine animal) is right
one is a bird but not a seabird
the other is a bit more tricky

I'm still fuming. I actually meant the other one, but got confused when it came to typing it out.

Anyway, I'm not one to hold a grudge.

A male swan is definitely a cob, isn't it?

On the grounds that some of them look like corn-on-the-cob, sea cucumbers.

not rodents nor sea cucumbers but you are on the right lines with the other speculations.
