I'll give it to thehut.

Nothing that Alanis talks about in the song could be described as irony (more bad luck). However, surely the fact that she wrote a song called Ironic which doesn't contain any irony is the very apotheosis of irony? In fact, she might very well have done that on purpose, although probably not.

(and I would say most British folk wouldn't understand the meaning of irony either. Like Baldrick).

Anyway, thehut, have the baton!

I'm with Weyland, isn't most of the crap she comes out with not ironic - e.g 'like rain on your wedding day' or 'good advice that you just didn't take'

It's all getting confused... ;)

Another quickie, seeing as I've just been listening to it: What's the first town namechecked in "It's Grim Up North" by The JAMMs?

(and I recommend whoever gets this right digs up another phoenix, this one's getting a bit old now)

Nope, there's far grimmer places up here, Hartlepool's not even in the song! ;)

I've not heard the song either, but I'm going for John O' Groats.

It really is grim (and bleak) up there.

Tut tut, what were you guys doing in 1991? ;) In case you don't know, the JAMMs are also known as those wacky funsters the KLF.

John O'Groats isn't in the song either. Halifax is, but near the end. So a clue: It's in the North West.

aH... The Justified Ancients of Mumu?

Why didn't you say so?... I was a big fan of theirs.... even when they set fire to £1,000,000 in a publicity stunt I was right behind them.

They were one of the first decent technobands....

Still, funk knows the answer to the question though. Barrow-in-Furness?

Huddersfield is in, BIF isn't.

Yes, I should have put the full name rather than the acronym, you're right. But I've never called then anything else. ;)

This song was the last they released as the JAMMs, and it was right in the middle of their "Stadium House" trilogy as The KLF.

It was quite notorious at the time, as a load of graffitti of the song's title suddenly appeared on motorway bridges leading to the North from the South. ;)

Anyway, another clue... this town's team is in the Premiership, with a very well-known manager.
