There were The 3 Bears in the Beano .. and Walter the Softie....

Beano was crap anyway... now Whizzer n Chips was a real comic... Bumpkin Billionaires, Mustapha Million ... ah ... fond, if hazy memories.
whizzer and chips was the mutts nuts, not only was it much better than the beano it was invariably always bigger, much more bang for your buck :D

and i think calamity james had segment in the beano

didnt dennis the menaces two dogs have their own section at one point? gnasher and gnipper or summat?

I remember one about a hunter, but he might have been chasing the 3 bears.

I take it Beryl the Peryl was from another comic then? I've got a vivid memory of her and Minnie the Minx appearing in the same strip, but maybe that was just a wayward fantasy.

What about Corky the Cat? Or was he The Dandy too?

Bah. I give up.

Heh. I've just had a quick look for the real answer, and I've found I'm right.... I did that book in primary school, but don't remember the first detail about it.

Anyway, non-existent plaudits aside, earlier to my very easy question about towns with exclamation marks, can you name any towns in Britain with an apostrophe.... NOT including places with cop-out ownership placenames like King's Lynn.

There could well be loads... I've not really given it a good ponder.

Er... probably, even though I've no idea what an elliptical apostrophe is.

Tam O' Shanter? :D Don't think so, but you're on the right lines.

Bingo!

The one I was thinking of originally was Bo'ness, which is a wee town on the Forth (I lived there for a year or two). It's full name is Borrowstouness, but it never get's called that.

Over to you sir.
