No probs - most of the people in the Phoenix are either battle-scarred SWP veterans or word puzzle fiends!

Sticking with English, I find it interesting how some words don't exist in English. For example, I was told in French that there was no word for shallow (as in the shallow end), they simply use the word "pas profonde" (not deep). I'm not sure whether this is strictly true, but there are certainly examples of this in English.

So, can anyone name an example of a word in English that doesn't exist? :D

dunno if this counts but, rosé (as in wine) uses a supefluous ´ because the french word for pink is just rose. we only use the ´ to differentiate it from our (English) word rose.

I fear you have wasted a future phoenix question with that nugget Sue, but it's another interesting and yet completely useless bit of trivia that has no doubt pushed some other piece of vital information out.

One of these words refers to livestock...

bugger. and you know how long it takes me to type even the simplest word at this time of night (drunkenness).

erm, cattle... hmm. charolais?

BINGO!

Not sure what charolais is, but according to the Oxford English Dictionary, there is no recognised word for a cattle on his tod.

There was another one relating to the opposite of another well known verb but in the meantime over to sue.
