A few hints - he died in 2000. It's the name of the radio station he founded that is comical. (Subhint - think of the way America labels their stations).
As for my new Avatar - I've been playing around with Photoshop for quite a while now, and am actually starting to get reasonable results
. Nabbed the backdrop from Reds' site however...

Eek. I've absolutely no idea. I know American radio stations like to use initials, but that doesn't really help me.
I think I'll leave it to the daytime boffins.

bix biederbecke?
thelonius monk?
i probably know less about jazz than HE.
a mate of mine describes it as five men on a stage playing five different songs.
i went to ronnie scott's in soho a while back and everyone there was having so much fun but i just didn't get it. seems very unmusical to me.

Heh, Doctor is on the right lines!
Also agree with UP - I only remembered this question because a chap at work is nuts about Jazz and at least once a day I get cornered in the office with some pretty-useless nugget of Jazz related trivia!

It could indeed!
And to wrap it up (actually, the original question!
) the answer was:
Alex "Sleepy" Stein. KNOB radio, in California, in 1957
What a hoot!
(LOL!)

KNOB, excellent.

I'm thinking Derry or Berwick, but they play in another country, they're not really split.
I'll go for Total Net Solutions.

Inter Cable Tel?
My Welsh geography is awful, so I'm guessing teams which don't have a place name.

nope, the team plays in the english league (just).
but TNS was a very good guess since they represent both oswestry (in england) and some welsh place with an interminable name.
