What makes Frankel so special? It was interesting when a few weeks ago the fools at Channel 4 made a 2 part 'documentary' on how the greatest horses had huge hearts, assumed Frankel must have a big one but then never actually gave any detail whatsoever into how big it is or even tried to investigate! I'm sure some of the old grannies had a moan to the watchdogs when they had actual horse hearts out on tables covered in blood being shown on daytime TV!

To me, here are the things that make him so special and pretty much unbeatable over any distance he can cover:
1. Amazing acceleration, he really does lengthen stride quickly and immediately, it really does resemble a turbo boost/NOS burst!
2. Sustained period of acceleration, he can actually go at a very high speed (around 40-42mph) for a furlong or 2, then stays on a decent speed for another furlong or so. He's never really had to battle so this could bring more quality we haven't even seen (and probably won't need to)
3. He is versatile, he can have a strong paced lead, a slow paced lead or make the running himself, with acceleration like his that is not at all surprising.
4. He believes in himself. This may sound stupid but look at how this horse walks arolund and looks. Do not think for 1 moment that this horse does not know he is special, that he doesn't know that every horse he has raced so far has not even come close to lowering his colours.

Frankel's only weakness is his jockey, there are jockeys out there who could get more out of him, but since no horse even seems to come close, I don't think that's actually going to bother anyone.

It would be interesting to see how Camelot would fare against him but I doubt we'll ever see that race. Camelot also has lightning quick acceleration.

There's been a huge amount of research into heart size and performance by such eminent geneticists such as William E Jones, an American.
Lots of equine superstars have exceptionally large hearts, such as Phar Lap, Sea Bird, Sham and possibly the greatest ever, Secretariat (who has the largest recorded heart in history)
There are only four sire lines that have the ability to transmit a large heart. on the x chromosome. If one traces back the genetic pattern for the transmission of the x , which is from sire to daughter and from that daughter to her son(s), the incidence of strong race performance is more or less continuous.
When Frankel passes on, the autopsy will reveal his heart size.

Below is maybe the greatest performance in racing history.
