Not sure this article gives the full story, but kudos to this chap in any case:

The kind of obsessive dedication to gaining the upper hand that might make a good SWPist?

As ever the devil here is in the detail. Hundreds of pounds a week in wins every week for that length of time, over and above the cost of the phone calls? It's not like simply getting through to the studio is the success point - on all of those shows I'd say you have no more than say a 1 in 30 chance of a winning answer even when you do get through to the studio - they normally only find the 6 or 7 'knowable' answers then reveal the 5 or more impossible ones at 4.00am to an audience made up of 37 nightshift security workers and assorted insomniacs.
One valid point the article does raise - it is always sad to hear how many callers they get who are drunk or elderly and who don't really seem to get the point of the exercise. I suppose that is one area where SWPs and AWPs differ - it is very rare you see what you might deem 'vulnerable' people piling huge amounts of cash into a quiz machine. It is usually groups of friends contributing a quid or two each, and besides the nature of the games usually means it is impossible to lose large amounts quickly. The same cannot be said on both counts for the fruit machines - both in terms of vulnerable people playing them and the speed at which you can pump £20/£50/£100/... into one for little or no return.
It's interesting to see the policy that at least one of the motorway service chains now employs in this regard - they ask staff to casually speak to someone who is still playing in the Games Area the next time they carry out the '30 minute check' (or whatever the timing is). It doesn't stop the greedy feckers having 20 or 30 machines in every motorway service station mind you...

i've watched this show before a few times and it beats the hell out of me as to how they are allowed to get away with this kind of blatant scamming.

I think it was one of ITV Play shows that had the quiz "Items in a womans handbag". The answers included balaclava and rawl plugs.
What the hell sort of women do they know?!
