In my drunken state last night I got 'pot committed' shall we say on this.
One of those - "I want to play the endgame, no matter how much it costs me" moments.
Got to the end game with 2 shots and no lives.
1st shot - 20p
2nd shot - 40p
Net loss on endgame 40p.
Never again.

I only play this in one pub and since it got upgraded to £1 only it seems much happier, more often than not I end up on the end game. I always knock out values before i take any shots. The last time I played I had one shot and the £50 stayed right until there were 3 values left, £50, £6, and (I think) £2. Guess what, the nexy value to be knocked out was the £50!
I ended up with the £6 and I only played once so got a £5 profit but I have to say I wasnt shocked the £50 went, just that it took so long!

Revisited this at lunchtime but I still think it looks very tough. Not only does the player have to reach the endgame, but really you then need lives left to start building up a stash of shots. Like HornyNick I take the values out before using shots although I don't know whether there is an advantage in doing that. The nature of the endgame is such that the machine can very easily prevent you from taking much. I got a £3, which is about what I'd got when I first reached the endgame. Given it's £1 per play, I wonder what percentage these realistically pay out at.
