One appeared briefly in O'Neills in High Wycombe and there's one in a pub I know in Preston but other than that they do seem quite rare beasts. There is another DOND cabinet I've seen in London which is much bigger and flashier; in that case the prizes are I believe paid out as credits for the bar rather than in cash - I'm not sure why that is.

I've seen a free-standing DOND machine (not a fruit machine) before, and thought it looked intriguing but didn't play it. That said, it looked slightly different to the machine on the link you provide.

The one I saw had 16 boxes with an LCD on the main display. It would display 16 numbers - then would draw numbers out the hat and you had to reject or accept them.
An accepted number is then replaced by another. All accepted numbers are added together and if you get a high enough score, you get to the end game.
Very similar to the Skill Bingo, i.e. need to be skilful AND lucky.

That sounds like the one I saw Cardinal - certainly the sixteen LCD boxes rings a bell.

They had a huge DOND down my bowling alley for about 2 weeks (?) with the 'crazy chair' and everything. It was only really a 'high score' game, although you did get something if you got the 100,000 or 250,000 I think. It took up half of the place lol. Probably got rid of it due to 'Give It A Go', 'Rollercoaster has come off the rails' etc, blaring out whilst people were trying to strike-out...

Yes, I've seen one of these near to me.
You select a box, seemingly at random. The other boxes are then opened by the animated figures who offer some inane advice such as "you're playing really well". The amounts they reveal are removed from the prize list. Noel Edmonds pops up now and then with a soundbite, e.g. "the banker knows he's up against a real winner". It's all rather dull, at least until the final choice.
