London help

Since I know many chaps on here are City based and I've never been to London I thought I'd ask for help on here.

Going to Alexandra Palace on 4th Jan. Planning to fly into Luton then get the StelliosBus to Baker St.

1st Question: Is it easy enough to get the tube from Baker St to Kings Cross (where my hotel is)?

2nd question: Whats the Kings Cross area like for drinking - me and my old boy so nothing too posh?

Apologies for sounding like a moron, but I've never been and the logistics of it scare the hell out of me.

1st question: yes, it's very straightforward to get from Baker Street to King's Cross - just take any of the Circle, Hammersmith and City, or Metropolitan Lines from Baker Street station to King's Cross station (about five stops). Bear in mind these will sometimes be down at the weekend - in which case you could either take e.g. the Bakerloo and Victoria lines, changing at Oxford Circus, or take the replacement bus which will be laid on.

2nd question: King's Cross is not brilliant for boozing. Trouble is pubs either tend to be very rough and ready, reflecting the historically poor nature of the area, or tedious trendy bars, reflecting its up-and-coming status. The best places tend to be on or just off the south side of Euston Road, immediately south of King's Cross. Good pubs in that area include the Euston Flyer and Mabel's Tavern. Up by Euston there's a cracking pub called the Bree Louise, and about ten minutes down Gray's Inn Road is quite a nice boozer called the Calthorpe Arms. You can find maps to all of these on beerintheevening or fancyapint or other similar websites. PM me if you need any more advice.

Are you off to watch the darts ross?
Not from london but been to alexandra a few times and it is a right pain in the arse getting from there back to Wood Green tube station. A shuttle bus service is provided but can take an age if there are 6000 punters all trying to catch the tube into central london late at night.
The shuttle bus service to the venue is more refined, but, as i say, the return leg can be abit of a bun fight!
Sometimes it is ok but i once saw the keiser chiefs there and ended up missing the last train connection to tonbridge.
In the end my bruv and i ended up in the hardrock casino (interesting) until it closed at 4, both of us ended up about 400quid better off and we paid a minicab driver 50quid each to take us home! so every cloud and all that. . .
there maybe an easier way to kings cross but others will advise

I'd say the better route from Kings Cross to Alexandra Palace is to get the overground train from Kings Cross to Alexandra Palace station and walk up the hill to the venue itself.

Anything is better than that tube station! Is the overground station alot closer then? Could i use a different route from victoria? I was travelling from Charing Cross before.

It's certainly closer, yes - and definitely walkable although it is quite steeply uphill from the station, so perhaps not one for the very old or infirm. From Victoria you could get the Victoria Line at King's Cross and get the train to Alexandra Palace: I *think* you could also stay on to Finsbury Park and then get the same train (not definite about that though).

Cheers guys.

From what I can see on websites, there's a train every 15-20 mins from Kings Cross - Ally Pally station.

Yeah taking my old man down for the finals on Jan 4th. Canny wait.

Do you need a guide to the quizzicular delights of the area, Ross? - there are plenty of pubs with machines within easy walking distance of King's Cross/Euston.
