Was playing on a gamestation yesterday. Started with the obvious answers set. Bonus round awarded after the £1 round. Took a '£1.00 cash win' 'card' and continued through the £3 and £5 rounds, questions still a breeze, mainly really obvious like the first round. Got to the £10 round and got killed on the LAST question which would have bagged me the tenner. Ended up with £6 (£5 + £1 bonus win).

Now, if I had got the last question correct this would have awarded me £10 + £1 bonus win = £11. The jackpot on this as everyone knows is £10. Could it have legitimately paid over the jackpot amount, or did I get screwed on the last question to avoid paying over it's stated highest amount?

I've actually never seen the £1 bonus prize on this game - it's always an extra Cheat, Pass or Try Again (if you've lost that already). The only comparison I could make to this was the old JPM Cluedo, where the JP payout was reduced if you had already won the 6 Suspects bonus so that the total you won was the JP and no more, and I only ever did that a few times.

I suppose this is a key area where AWPs and SWPs differ in payout legislation. For AWPs, it states that 'No prize greater than £nn can be won in any one game', where nn=jackpot value. I'm not sure it stipulates this on SWPs, maybe someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

So in this case, the 'jackpot' is indeed a tenner, but any wins obtained during normal play are 'not included' as part of the jackpot award that you went on to win.

Hmm, I didn't word that very well, but I'm sure you'll get my drift. So, it begs the question, is there a difference between 'the maximum' you can win per credit and the 'jackpot' available per credit?

Same here. And I had already lost the try again. From memory it offered '£1.00 cash win', 'Cheat', 'Re-take round' and another red (bad) one. It was in a VERY good mood keeping to the same 'humorous' question / answers right in to the £10 round. Just got stuffed on the last question typically.

I'd assume it would just have been a tenner. Nil Satis's comments re Cluedo jackpot + cash prize/bonus suspects only = jackpot are accurate.

However, just to muddy the waters, on Hangman £30 jackpot + £10 cash prize = £40, and there was a rather interesting bug on Guinness Book of Records whereby it was possible to win £30 (£10 for bonus letters + £20 for jackpot) when it was "showing".

I believe that there is no legal maximum prize for SWP pay-outs, and the gradual progression from £10 to £20 and now £50 over the years has just been a matter of industry practice (someone will correct me if I'm wrong I'm sure).

I've had a £1 bonus prize once or twice on Pub Quiz but never combined it with a jackpot (JPs are fairly rare for me on this - a deceptively hard game and I generally have to rely on the occasional helper mode games that crop up). I would guess, though, that it would have paid you £11.00 i.e. the £10JP plus your £1 bonus prize. There's certainly some games which can pay a higher prize than advertised - an example is Risk on the Ind:es where I recently got two double prizes such that I'd have got £40 (rather than the advertised £20JP) if I'd have completed all four levels (needless to say, I didn't manage to!)

My final question is: what is a Gamestation when it is at home?

Sorry, my bad. I'd had a few and dont normally stray from it:boxes. It was the one with the 'widescreen' touchscreen (which incidentally ruined my perfected bully's gamble technique due to it's very slight 'delay').

Aaaaah why is this game so popular? is it only me or is it pants to play and look at. Please tell me its pants

I think it's popular with punters because it's so simple to understand. Personally I find it very dull and have never yet reached a stage when it has got anywhere near the top of my own 'hit list' of the games I choose to play.

It's also the subject of one of my pet hates, namely when I'm waiting for punters to finish playing this so I can get on the machine and 90% of them don't realise that by tapping the right hand side of the screen you can bring up the questions about four times faster than standard - although I accept that it may be that some DO realise but prefer to prolong their games by playing v-e-r-y s-l-o-w-l-y...

I'm inclined to agree. It's pure trivia. None of the refusing to land you on the one square you need, or the first £1 prize being a million points / levels away. Yes, the question sets can fluctuate between the outstandingly obvious to the very obscure. But you pretty much know where you stand ie its either 2 or 3 rounds to the first quid and 4 or 5 questions to each round.

And the benefit of each prize being 'safe' (you can't lose what you've won) has an attraction for the casual player.

On the vague theme of max payouts, I found an old ItBox 54 recently on which I played Crossword Quiz. The prize for the top word in the endgame was £8 rather than the usual £5. Anyone seen that before? Anyone know how high the max prize could have gone on that? I'd only ever seen £5s, and a couple of £3s, before.
