what is the correct answer
when the dimmish barmaid says "i've worked here for a year and never seen anyone win anything from that machine"?
"just lucky" is obviously bullshit.
"lots of practice" may be true but is an epiphany to her tiny mind.
do you gents have a stock phrase?

nobody ever wins on those things.

My stock response here is to offer a warm smile and laugh and say "I play them a lot" or similar - which has the benefit of being true, as well as (I hope) sounding more humble than saying "yeah - I am f**king good aren't I?" or similar. That said, I don't get comments *that* often - as has been said before, doing well at quiz games is less obvious than doing well at word games.

i like the "play them a lot" stance, seems to me a good deflector in the event of any acrimony. i'll have to remember that.
it was from the quiz games on this occasion, times are lean in wordgame profitability at the moment. the barmaid wasn't eyeballing the game; what i really meant was when the machine is near a bar and the whirr of machinery and sound of several coins crashing into the wintray fills an otherwise quietish pub. (e.g. itboxes are comparatively quiet, as you know paragons have metal wintrays). i understand that some of our AWP cousins put a newspaper down to cushion the rat-a-tat-tat.

Whilst my previous impish comment was based on the premise that you NEVER tell the barmaid which game you were actually playing - you tell her the one on which you are least likely to win in the vain hope that it somehow makes it up the chain back to the top. "Oh yeah £40 love - 2 jackpots on Toss the Monkey - piece of piss"
In former days, my standard trick was to carry around about £3 in 10p pieces in a separate pocket so as when challenged on a large payout, I would profer a handful of 10ps up and say 'Sounded better than it was luv - I only won £3'

Stupid punters. Telly all the week, screw the wife Saturday
I love this one, simple as it is I wish I'd thought of it. The dark days of playing in hell holes guarded by aggresssive "That's my holiday money" gaffas could have been much more comfortable.QuizMaster wrote:In former days, my standard trick was to carry around about £3 in 10p pieces in a separate pocket so as when challenged on a large payout, I would profer a handful of 10ps up and say 'Sounded better than it was luv - I only won £3'
