Thicko City

Anybody got a view on which the thickest town in Britain is? After years of travelling the Isles, I have noticed some towns where it seems that whatever you play, you can win by just turning up i.e. Millionaires on 1000, Big Match with the £2 in view on the first screen. Hangman offering £5 spots, all the DOND's on 10-15000.

My vote goes to Newcastle (the geordie one).

I've "done" central Newcastle a couple of times - the first it was indeed fantastic, but on the second occasion (a couple of years ago) it seemed much harder to make a filling. I've always found Manchester to offer rich pickings, tho' haven't been there for a fair old while. Both cities also have lots of town centre pubs in close proximity.

I agree. In my college the quiz machine is always being played by one of the various swarms that fight for dominance, without ever seeming to win more than £1, and seemingly ignorant of the fact that there are plenty of pubs with machines nearby that they should win on (but of course, they are scared of pubs).

i've not travelled nearly as much as some of you guys but when i was 17 i did some filming in manchester and i remember doing a roaring trade on standalones.

lately i've been ensconced in london and the east is definitely thicker than the west. it is also grottier.

Not always true, Cool. I was at Oxford and in my time there the machines, whether in pubs or college bars, were consistently well played.

Aw shucks, I'm blushing...

:o ops:

As for my vote, I've never really found a particularly standout city or town but would certainly say that certain pubs are more likely to be lucrative than others. Ones that are central and/or near train stations are more likely to visited by either pros or relatively skilled office workers, whereas out in the suburbs you sometimes find a little goldmine. These are of course though, by their very nature, much harder to track down and to visit several in one go will take you the whole day.

That's not surprising, considering that a combined college Oxford or Cambridge University Challenge team would wipe the floor with any other uni.

However, at many unis, you are much less likely to find the smarty-pantses that can clean up a quizzie game, as low admission requirements dissuade anybody good from applying and private bars prevent skilful laymen from filling their boots.

That's why Anglia Ruskin's Itbox is the most generous in Cambridge. 8)

Apart from lower-grade universities, isolated machines with captive audiences eg. the Old Orleans in the middle of Epping Forest are the most obliging. :D

Cardinal, hopefully you can answer a question that has bugged me for some time now........

What is the Mousetrap jackpot?

I don't believe it actually tells you anywhere in the rules or the attract screen (but I could be wrong).

Alas, it is only a tenner.
