BRAINY David and Lesley Brewis have won £10,000 by playing pub quiz machines.
Chemistry teacher David, 27, and his wife took their winnings in £1 coins from 500 pubs.
The couple, who have been married for 18 months and are both Oxford University graduates, worked out they were smarter than the game The Big Match.
It gives players general knowledge questions plus a set of skill games and offers a £20 jackpot.
The couple discovered The Big Match was installed in hi-tech slot machines called itboxes — which house multiple games — in thousands of pubs and clubs.
They used the internet to map out where the machines were located — then set off on a ten-week trip covering 2,000 miles.

Ah well, it was nice while it lasted. Have to move on to something else now.............
Didn't take me 10 weeks I have to say, but then I haven't got a bird in tow to slow me down.
Hope this focuses those of you out there who claim that it's pointless playing for money on SWP.
Interesting how they've publicised it only after playing itBoxes? Wonder why they aren't still out there playing Gamesnets? Presumably because they can't locate them as easily as I can.

I know David and Lesley well - they are still playing it on GamesNets but, let's be honest, there's not that many GamesNets about are there? I suspect for David the lure of free publicity will have outweighed worries about losing potential winnings from those GamesNets he hasn't played... I'm interested to see others did know about this. I've been raiding these machines myself to a far lesser degree and they were so easy to win on (provided no-one else had already done so) that I found it difficult to believe no-one else had cracked the game. Certainly the radio silence on this forum was interesting, although entirely understandable. It shows that even a forum like this is not the place for true knowledge to be revealed - any wise QMer keeps the crucial information to himself.

"The Big Match has now been withdrawn — not because of the wins, but because the makers regularly change games"
One of the questions they repeatedly got:
"9. What is the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo? a) Hooverville, b) Gingerville, c) Brazzaville."
Another f**k-up by programmers, though at least not a critical one. Brazzaville is the capital of the Republic of Congo. The capital of D.R. Congo (formerly Zaïre) is Kinshasa.

Interesting to see such a public exposure for our little hobby and I don't doubt the story for one second but I am intrigued to know how this made it onto the pages of The Sun. Do they pay good money for a story like this, and hence David and Lesley made the judgement that is was worth them going public, or did they have some other motive for the 'free publicity'? And do David and Lesley lurk behind one of the pseudonyms on here??

Do you have a Gamesnet homing beacon, or can you now get a satnav that you can ask to direct you to the nearest hotel, restaurant or pub with a Gamesnet?

Really! All I can say is so what. I courted publicity to show how poorly I was treated by a landlord / pub company (LAUREL). I like grecian wouldnt publicise how much I make and what I play . They obviously are good at the particular game , but pretty stupid to get the story published in The Sun, along with photo.
