Not strictly speaking an SWP but may be of interest to some. A Heads Up poker game has turned up in a local Wetherspoons. Which would seem to contradict their no pool table ethos as this fulfils the same role albeit taking up less space with no sticks provided to hit people over the head with.

It is a quid for match against the computer. £2 for a match against someone else and £4 for a deeper stack match against someone.

Anyone up for any hustling?

The one in my spoons is only 50p for each player was on it the other day with my m8 and bro! Its pretty good though

These were mentioned in the Wetherspoons 'News' freebie - that they'd agreed to put these units into certain 'test locations' (or as we know them, 'pubs').

I've only seen two so far, and they were both out of order. It's the same unit that got a fairly sizeable chunk of space downstairs at the ATEI in January.

Ah Big Tony or Heads up Tony, I wanted to play that, but I have heard no further squeaks on this one, so I assume it was a flop.

As for the heads up poker game, it'll be something of a fad. You can play poker on line with peeps. Pool however, yes, you can play a pool simulation on line, but for the real thing you have to pop in £2 (London prices)/£1/50p/10p (if you're in a caravan park in Devon somewhere) for the thrill of knocking loads of yellow and red balls about and leaving the white as near to the 20p jelly bean dispenser as possible, so it's impossible for your mate to cue, now that's a safety shot.

The original Big Tony unfortunately made nowhere near enough money for the type of sites it was intended so never became widely available. It also needed a £500 JP machine licence.

These newer ones are for "amusement" only so have no licensing overheads and can be sited anywhere. There is nothing to stop players having side bets just as with a game of pool. There was originally some doubt over their legality but if Spoons are putting them in I would assume they are now considered 100% legal.

I'd be amazed if this became popular...people IMO tend to want to win money from machines, obv this doesn't provide this unless you have side bets which would probably be banned anyway (and definitely breaks the law)!

The desperation on the part of the manufacturers/pubs is truly stunning...
