One in my local used to display an amount in the credits which were bits that couldn’t be given as change,
ie you only have £ coins and the fags are £5.50 all them extras would be added up and you could use them, but the machine had to be turned off for at least a couple of hours.
Still I used to get free/cheep fags every sat/Sunday morning.
